Introduction

Hello.. I recently had my left kidney removed in June 2018 my recovery seems to be going well, I am usually someone who trains at the gym 3-4 times weekly I currently walk 2 miles a day & 4 miles at the weekend. I recently have some wind retention similar too directly after my operation but on a smaller scale gripes &slight stabbing pains has anyone had similar ?

i consider myself very lucky as my tumor was found due to a follow up scan from a blood clot in my right calf muscle, I am struggling mentally more since my dad has had his stomach removed from a nasty tumor which still has microscopic lymph nodes remaining in his Esophagus, even with chemotherapy it is difficult to treat.

thanks if you have read I suppose it’s just a venting post along with similar symptoms

  • Hi I'm new to this and hope you are feeling ok, I sorry to not be able to answer your question but do wonder if it's from the operation and things settling down inside.

Sorry about your dad and I can only imagine how you are feeling.

Can I ask you a question as I've had a ct scan which has shown am abnormality on my left kidney 2.5 cm and as I've been doing the worst thing possible by googling everything and have been referred to urology. Can't sleep or eat for worrying and just wondered if you had any symptoms and how you were diagnosed. I've been told the urology team are having an MDT meeting tomorrow and I am on list so I'm very nervous and extremely anxious that's why I'm typing this at 2am.

You sound like you keep yourself very fit with all the walking which I think is excellent.

If you don't feel up to answering my question I understand

    Thank you

  • Hi Shelley,

im sorry to hear your news, I know it’s easier said than done but wait until you find out what your dealing with first.

i kept busy with gym & work talked when I felt like it I joked a lot too strangely it helped, be positive too I read a book called “zen in the martial arts” as strange as it sounds it allowed me too tap into a strength I never knew I had, all I can say is how I dealt with things & still am but if I can help others in some way I will,

Thank you for your nice comments please let me know your scan results if you feel you can,

  • Hi are you able to talk to me as I'm awaiting surgery and am in the same situation as you, very frightened and hope you don't mind me messaging you. Hope you reply as I would like to ask you some questions

    Thanks michele

  • Hi Jonathan

    Hope your okay.

Can I just ask what sort of surgery did you have and how soon from diagnosis was the operation, it's just mine seems to be dragging out as I've now been referred to another hospital as that's were the surgeons are based and it's going to yet another MDT meeting.

I feel as though I'm going mad and can't stop stressing even though the consultant said don't stress it's only small, but I can't understand why everything Has to take so long.

We're you given a choice as to the whole kidney or partial, as the consultant that told me said it might only be partial removal but then I think would I want it all out.

Hope you don't mind me getting in touch with you, I don't really have anyone to talk to as my mam doesn't really want to talk about it.

What part of the country are you from, I'm from the north-east.

I'm just sitting next to my dog who is snoring his head off and I can hardly hear the tv for him.

  • Hi Michele

Thank you for replying, I hope your okay,

My surgery came about as a result of a totally different scan because I had a blood clot in my right calf, the consultant (blood clot specialist) then referred me to the cancer specialist who then told me I had a tumour in my left kidney & he was going to remove the entire kidney I never had a choice, it had not spread to the lymph nodes thank goodness!

from the initial blood clot scan to surgery it was about 6-7 weeks my op went ahead.

i am in Lincolnshire so I was lucky that lincoln hospital had its own speacialist.

i had great support from my wife (married after op in August) & her family, my Friends at work was great too it helped me to focus on my gym prior to op & joke about it as this put others at ease, I’m no expert but if you have a choice it possible may be smaller growth, each persons circumstances are different but find strength from something you enjoy & think ahead.

im back spinning 3 times a week as from this week also walking 2 miles on days off from gym it still feels weird but I try too listen to my body.

i have my 6 monthly scan November 28th so I’m nervous about this, but anyone can have something like this without even realising !

i hope this helps in some way keep me informed,

  • Hi Jonathan

    How are you?

A little update, saw consultant on 12th Nov, given a few options like watch and wait which I found strange, i mean do people do that anyway the next was to biopsy which he then said might hit a benign part but elsewhere could be cancer, or operation. I was then told it would be 8 weeks which I thought seemed a long time but he said this is normal waiting time so it looks like it could be Jan, not happy but what can I do.

How are you and your family .

I've started going out for walks to build up my cardio ready for operation as I'm not very fit and have started to feel an improvement.

    Keep in touch

    Michele

  • Hi another update, was told January for operation but got a letter other day to go for pre assessment on 7th Dec so I thght that's a bit soon and next day I get letter saying they want me to be admitted on 17th Dec ready for operation, you know I knew it would be so close to Christmas.

Thinking of you on the 28th, hope you and your family are ok.

    Keep in touch

    Michele

  • Hi Shelly,

do you prefer Shelly or Michele ? I hope your okay, it was similar to myself slow at first but then the operation was here very quickly, are they to remove the entire kidney?

I am so pleased you are walking it’s a great way to start your fitness before & after the surgery, take it steady afterwards listen to your body I still have strange nerve sensations, I’m back spinning 3 times a week if I get too tired I just rest.

i had my CT scan yesterday I have to wait about a week & half for results so I’m nervous, the scan for some reason wiped me out I was so tired afterwards, I will keep you updated please stay in touch as if we can help each other & possibly others then I think that’s outstanding !
