PICC line problems

I had my PICC line put in nearly weeks ago,  I have tiny veins and they only managed to find one apparently 'suitable' vein!  I've had 2 cleans but nothing but discomfort!    I have a constant burning, it throbs quite a bit and feels generally heavy!  There is always blood at insertion site and it is not a comfortable feeling at all!  I feel a pulling if I lift anything as heavy as a kettle (even a heavy handbag) and it's really wearing me down.

The Oncology unit don't understand why and I am now having a scan next week to check for a PE - i don't think it's this as there are no other symptoms!!   I think this is just down to a small vein and the little metal clip aggravating it!!!

I just can't bear the thought of another 14 weeks of this :(  I was told that once it was in you shouldn't generally feel anything . . . I just wondered if anyone else has or has had the same sort of issues and what happened?

Any comments would need really appreciated THANKS

  • Hi

where is your picc line? Mine was positioned on the inside of the top of my arm under where the biceps are, hope that makes sense.  It was threaded up my arm ruthenium around under my collar bone area and through down into my chest.  It was very comfortable and never had any problems, albeit I hated it.  My veins a hard to get so unsure if maybe it just might be the position or area they’ve put it.  They know best though so I’m sure they will figure out what’s happening.  Their intent is always to ensure you comfortable so keep on until it’s where you feel it’s best.

    Best wishes

  • Yeah mine is pretty much the same!!

  • Let them try figure out why it’s not comfortable because it should be.  Do you have a cover you put on it, I did and it gave support too which also helps.  Hope they resolve it soon for you hang in there it’s better than getting it put in and being jabbed every time.

Also I heard that plaster bit that holds it on can be very irritating to the skin, maybe see if that’s it and there’s anything else they can use

    Best wishes xx

  • Hi Enchantika! I know it's been a little while, but did they resolve this in the end for you? And how?

I'm having exactly the same issues as you - bleeding and painful and everyone I've seen so far is saying all's fine with its position... it's driving me insane!
