Radical nephrectomy

This is my first ever post

in February 2018 I went to my local A&E department with suspected gall stones, an ultrasound and a few hours later I was told by A&E Dr they had seen something on my kidney and asked me to come back in 2 days for a CT scan where they discovered a 12cm mass on my right kidney.

I was referred to the local Urology team where I was given a welcome to cancer guide along with a kidney cancer guide.  The Dr I originally met was quite nice he reassured me and spoke to me really calmly and explained what their plans were for me moving forward (partial nephrectomy) told me my surgery would be with 4-6 weeks and I was being placed on an urgency list.

since then I have had my pre assessment for surgery and blood works all up to date and also an appointment with the anesthetist. 2 weeks ago I got a hospital letter to see a senior Urologist who explained to me that he has had a look at my scans and my tumor/mass is positioned a little more complicated than they had originally thought and the plan now was to remove the whole kidney.

I suppose this whole story is irrelevant but I’m wondering about recovery times (I know everyone is different) how long were peoples hospital stays? I’m a 29 yr old mother of a 7 & 5 year old and I’m now starting to panick! My surgery is on Tuesday morning and I know I have brushed everything off leading up to now but as I write this whilst putting my children to bed I feel alone and scared and almost like I’ve been hit by a freight train!!

I am sorry about the essay! I’m a talker!!

  • I’m so sorry to hear you’ve got more problems to deal with. It’s horrible that you have to go through more treatment and must be very worrying time waiting until the end of June for more tests. When did you get out of hospital? I believe the first two weeks most difficult, hopefully you are starting to heal now. The most important thing is that this is being dealt with and you have a team of people focused on getting you healthy. Hold onto that. You will be healthy, and fully enjoying life again  Big virtual hug and lots of healing, loving thoughts coming your way. Love, Caroline

  • Hello everyone, I am taking this opportunity to post about my experience as well with a radical nephrectomy.

Today 13 Dec 2018 is my second day in hospital. All went well but the first 24 hours was very tough. Difficult dealing with the nauseous, propping myself up in bed and toilet trips etc, all almost impossible at first due to pain, morphine didn’t agree with me so only taking paracetamol

Anyway I was diagnosed with 8cm tumour on my right kidney on the 12th November 2018 and operated on the 11th December, everything happened so quick.

Now is the recovery and waiting for the pathology

    Wishing you all the best

    love
