Im on my last week of radiotherapy but have now got a cold and a horrible cough. I went today but don’t feel to good tonight, has anyone still gone for there radiotherapy while having the same. I’ve got 3 days left of treatment then I’ve finished..

  • Hello Shirl3,

I just wanted to stop by and check on how you are getting on. Is your cough any better? If not you might want to consider giving your medical team a call and see if they can help. Also, our brilliant team of cancer nurses will be happy to chat with you about this situation. They're available on this phone number 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Good luck with your last three days of treatment, Shirl3. Once you feel up to it, please let us know how you're doing.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Shirley,  when hubby was having radiotherapy So e one else had a cold but they still blitzed him.  As Renationalisation says there is always someone to talk to on this site.

  • Just days after my last radiotherapy session I have caught a cold and cough with a tickly throat from my Daughter .. I have taken a natural cough mixture but will keep an eye on myself as I have also had chemo xxxx Hope your cold and cough get better soon xxxxx

  • Hi Shirl,

I am aware that your post was a long time ago and I hope you are now fully healed and cancer free. I am replying in case my answer helps anyone else.

Two days before my first treatment (on my right breast) I started to go down with a virus from my child; a cough and fever.

When I phoned my team, they said "come in if you can get here" and that therapy will take place "unless you are bedridden or admitted to A&E for something" (they were very kind and reassuring)

On the evening of my second treatment day my temperature went over 39°C. In the days, it was just below 38°C with the help of medicine, but I was feeling awful.  I struggled in with the help of my lovely husband, but actually found the cool filtered air of the unit was very soothing. My cough and sneeze susided while I was there and with that (and a good decongestant) I managed my time on the table with a minimum of coughs.

The very high temperature I had was uncomfortable everywhere and I don't think it was good for the radiation site to get so hot for so long. Luckily, it was early in my treatment programme.

I have now done 4/15 and am enjoying a weekend break. Looking forward to my extra days off over Christmas next week. (What I want for Christmas? ...no side effects !!!  :)

Best advice: talk to your team.  The above was true for my case but may be different for others, for example left or deep chest where the heart or lungs need to be protected..

Also; remember the moisturiser!! It feels a bit weird, but I missed it one day when I was unwell and really noticed the redness begin.

I wish you all health, healing and happiness and problem free treatments.

  • Hello, I am on my last two treatments and experiencing the same, I have a tightness on the chest and headaches  . Have been taking fresh ginger and honey to ease the coughing which does help.
