Holby City and my cancer!

I have adenoid cystic cancer, very rare I know, but it was featured in a story line on Holby City in a very negative way with the word's " your cancer will kill you"! I rang the BBC but can't get this out of my head as I have been so positive so far and this has really messed my head up. The doctors diagnosed it as a rare primary breast cancer so I had a mastectomy and radiotherapy a year ago and have my oncologist s appointment next week.

  • Hi Nannie,

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to read about your situation and Holby messing with your head.

I have a long standing gripe over the portrayal of cancer in TV soaps. I started my cancer journey at around the time Hayley in Coronation Street started hers. That was quite well researched but Hayley had been referred, tested, scanned, diagnosed, treated and had died in the time I was waiting for my first treatment! Friends and relatives seemed to imagine I was on some sort of slow track care pathway!

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • Dear Dave, Thanks for replying.....nice to know I am not alone!

  • lol - my old friend Max56 and I had a good old rant about Corrie at the time. So you are definitely not alone. As long as we can remember that real life is always more complex than soaps, we'll be OK!

Just don't get me going about Emmerdale and Subarachnoid haemorrhages (SAH). My wife had one in the year I was diagnosed. 60% of patients die before they reach A&E and of the surviving 40% most end up with long term brain damage and/or physical disabilities. My wife was one of the lucky 5/10% who don't have either but it took three years to be sure.

On Emmerdale recently. Lawrence had an SAH and within 24 hours had discharged himself from hospital and got drunk on whisky! You can probably imagine the furore on the equivalent form :-)

    Cheers

    Dave
