Essential thrombocythaemia

Hi, I was diagnosed with E.T about 2 years ago. I'm 48, they found it through a blood test after I had very high bp, headaches and dizziness. My platelet count doesn't seem too high by all accounts at the moment so I'm just on a daily aspirin and bp meds. I'm also on a beta blocker which they said was for anxiety/palpitations, but can also be used to lower bp.

I was wondering a few things - firstly that some people have said palpitations go with ET? Why didn't they tell me that, instead of making me feel like I'm just a nervy patient? Naturally I'm anxious about the disease!?

Secondly, is this necessarily a progressive thing? Could my platelet count stay where it is, or even go down?

Since the diagnosis I have gone vegan, which suits me, and I now run the times a week. I just did my first 10k and raised over £300 last Sunday. The only thing I feel now is fatigue, but I'm not exactly young anymore anyway, so I don't know what normal fatigue is. I do hit a 'wall' from time to time and just have to sleep for half a day though.

Anyway, thanks for reading x

  • Hi there ... if you writs on "ask the nurses" or use their help line or McMillan have one too , they can answer your medical questions a lot more fully ... they are really good and answered my questions when I wasn't sure were to turn and felt confused ... they are all trained nurses , so worth giving them a try ...

just one thing though , no wonder your having tired days with a 10k run ... although good on ya raising the money ... may be idea to find a gentler form of fund raising ... so be kind to your body , it needs T L C  right now , me thinks ... I wish I could run to the end of our street ... and there's only 4  houses long ... ; )).

So hope you get the answers you want ... regards Chrisie X
