Life after Zoladex injection for prostate cancer

Hi i was wondering if someone may be able to give me a little help? My father was diagnosesd with stage 4 prostate cancer in 2015 and received radiotherapy, after this he was given a zoladex injection every 3 months.fantastically his PSA levels have dropped to near non existant which we are extatic about.  His oncologist has now stopped his injections. During treatment he had severe leg, muscle and bone pain from it, weight gain, memory loss, and extream tiredness (some days he can sleep 5-8 hours and still sleep all night). His last injection was 12 weeks ago and his symptoms are still the same - i was just wondering if they ever go away and if so does anyone have any experience as to how long it takes? I know exercise is reccomeneded but hte pain he hasd in his legs are so bad he is now wheel cahir bound as good as so the smallest aount of exercise really hurts him - he has been diagnosed with avascular necrosis in his hip - they are not sure if this is a direct effect of the medication and radiotherapy.

  • Hi,

And welcome to this friendly forum

I had Zoladex for two years plus 37 radiotherapy sessions and my psa dropped from 70 to 0.01 the lowest they can measure. I suffered weight gain, some memory loss and some pain in my hip joints. As I was fairly active during treatment and afterwards, the pain was not to bad and a short time after finishing hormone treatment gradually dissapeared. I was told by my oncologist that the hormones take about a year to flush out of your sysytem. The hot flushes were the most troublesome of the side effects for me and even though the treatment ended five to six years ago I still get the odd few.

With regard to the tiredness, this may be more down to the radiotherapy. I understand it can sometimes manifest itself a few months after radio has ended and can take a while to dissapear. I was very lucky in that most side effects were not too bad and I looked on them as a small price to pay for the terriffic result I'd had. I would get your father to mention this to his treatment team/GP as they should be informed.

Wishing you and your father continued good results and I hope the pain get less rapidly.

Please let us know how things go on. Sending kind thoughts your way, Brian

  • Can you give an update I do not like the Zoladex implant and the tablets. I'm having Cyberknife to remove a Lymph node then want to stop Zoladex after 3 months.. I woulde continue with a natural Hormone, expensive, but it works. How long to recover? from the injection

    Thanks

    BrianP

  • Hi most times it wears off over three or four months (odd times it can be permanent) you could try a massage mat then he doesn't have to move much but it exercises mussels I been using one for months it does help. Good luck.

  • Hi BrianP,

I was on Zoladex for two years and my consultant told me it could take a year for the hormone to completely flush through my system. I was still having hot flushes for up to about five years after stopping the zoladex allthough gradually getting less as time went by. But everyone is differnt and we all react differntly. But it did the trick and got rid of the cancer so I look on it as a small price to pay for the resulys I got.

    Best wishes, Brian

  • How about weight gain . did you loose it after stopping Zoladex

  • Hi BrianP,

No I didnt losse it. I put on two stone and despite trying hard just can not seem to lose it. But I just tell my wife there is more of me these days ha ha.

    Take care, Brian

  • I too had bad leg pains I was taking 40mg statins at the same time I stopped taking the statins and within 2 wks I was I was ok ish still having sweats and tingling and terrible tiredness 5 yrs later still having them.

  • I’ve just ended Zoladex after 4.5 years ("If it works, don't fix it"). PSA was 0.04 for almost 4 years.

    Wondering about recovery.

  • Hi,

My  PSA has dropped from over 2500 in November 2018 to 38 as at August 2019, but was on the way up:  68 in October.  Finished Chemo in July.  Do not have confidence in Gosrelin, as it has necessitated Zoledronic Acid injections, so intend to cease implants from November onwards. Seems to be a bit like swallowed a fly, now the spider?

Now looking for a Plan B!  Any suggestions, apart from a frog? Lol!

  • You might consider casodex but with chloroquine
