Mastectomy

Hi all..just an update.

I've stage 2 breast cancer and had mastectomy  on 4th sept 2017 on left breast..All went well and I had expender put in ready for reconstruction at a later date..The care and support so far has been great from hospital to home.I was terrified on initial diagnosis but feeling very positive so far..got results on 20th for next stage of treatment. To all you ladies and men it's not as bad as it seems when your diagnosed with cancer...its scary I know but be positive and things will turn out  ok..good luck to you allxx

  • Hi littledeb

what a reassuring post -thank you.

I have recently been diagnosed too. I am having a lumpectomy and sentinel node extraction on 21st - scary times eh!

So glad you are feeling well - helps us earlier in the process to feel a little less anxious.

will be thinking of you on the 20th.

    Take care

  • Hi Sandra. Had both done in August, got to admit it was relatively easy. My consultant and his team were brilliant. Done as day surgery so home with a cuppa by 7 in the evening. Was uncomfortable for a couple of days afterwards and tired for a few weeks more. Had none of the nasties you hear about, infection, seroma etc. Scars healed really well with a bit of help from a well known oil. So far so good. Should start rt within the next couple of weeks, on tamoxifen now.
  • Hi Rileyroo

Wow go you girl. It's so reassuring to read your response thank you.

How long is your radiotherapy for? currently mine is planned for 3 wks would really appreciate it if you let us know how it goes. Bless it feels like I am the kid who is saying "you go first" :-/

Mine is oestrogen receptive too but I am to have letrozole - don't know why not tamoxifen!

Once again thanks for the positive post really grateful.

take care Rileyroo- onwards and upwards :-)

  • I'm down for three weeks of rt, seems to be a fairly standard dose/treatment. I have a work colleague who has had a full mastectomy and reconstruction, she is also due to have the same dose when she's more healed. I'm on tamoxifen for two years to try and reduce the amount of bone density I will lose, got an existing problem in that dept as it is. Due to go onto AI's after two years but have been told I can go back on Tamox (can't keep typing that) if I can't cope with AI's. Got the first 'meeting' with the rads lot on Wednesday, don't think this includes planning the treatment but who knows?! Take care, I'll let you know how I get on, if I can string a sentence together when I get back. The hospital I go to has the most infuriating appointment system. Archaic doesn't cover it.
  • Cheers Rileyroo

    Ya a goodin

As both you and [@Littledeb]‍ are ahead of me in treatment wonder if either of you have asked approx how long before you can drive again - assuming you could drive before:-)

No worries if not - I'll ask at my next meeting.

    Ta muchly

    take care both

  • I was told by my insurance company that as long as the consultant said it was OK I could start. My consultant appointment was four weeks post op and they were happy for me to start as soon as I was able. They just said to make sure I was comfortable with a sudden (emergency) stop and, as my surgery was on the left, using the handbrake and gears. I found the first time quite uncomfortable bordering painful but I've managed a thirty mile drive today with no problems.

A small cushion under the seat belt helps but you're

    probably familiar with that.

  • Eee Rileyroo what a star

well done on your 30 miler!

My op will be on my right so hopefully less of a prob with gears nd handbrake.

I'll give my insurance company a ring just to make sure I'm still covered.

Thanks again your responses have cheered me up no end.

    Take care

  • That sounded like a proper 'Northern' reply!

And yes, see what your insurance company says. From what I understand (isn't a great deal by the way, I hate insurance companies with a passion. A necessary evil it seems most of the time!) there isn't a consistent approach to this.  The advice I was given was to get the op bit out of the way and then ring the company when you have your wits back in order. Some have a very specific time frame they apply and others take a more educated? view as mine  did.

  • Hi

im having chemo at the moment for triple negative breast cancer. Coping well but really scared about the next stage. The thought of having a mastectomy terrifies me. Nice to hear from people who have been through it.

    Wendy

  • Hi Wendy. Mine was a lumpectomy by choice. Consultant gave me option of mastectomy or lumpectomy. I took the easier route as I was advised  that there was nothing to be gained for me in having a mastectomy, sorry if this thread has mislead you.  I do have a work colleague who had a full mastectomy with reconstruction the day afyer my more minor surgery and she is recovering well but obviously has a lot more healing still to do.
