The good and the bad

Hi peeps

I have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Taking the excellent advice on this website I pretty much started by taking it one day at a time. This does indeed help.

I thought to share the good and the bad and would love to hear anyone else's should they wish to share.

Today I had both a good and a bad moment. I received 2 letters in the post.

The first was from the hosp confirming my op date (my bad moment) cos my stomach dropped and I had that now familiar feeling of anxiousness take hold for a moment but shook it off cos I know it is needed.

The good - my 2nd letter - as if... a tax rebate - boom  . Not half put a much needed smile on my face . Reckon a my treat family meal is in order.

Eeee it's the little things ain't it.

Take care peeps

  • Good:hi all finely got grass cut been waiting for it to dry plugged mower in it started to rain I thought either the mower goes pop or I do got it done for another week,

  • Hi Sandra,

The nurses asked me to check out this thread and to sort of keep a diary going.

The bad, my adolescent son has been diagnosed with testicular cancer this week and the CT showed its travelled up to his lungs which means after surgery he will need chemo. They'll put in a central line while they remove the teste with the tumour.

The good, I'm proud of him for taking the news in his stride. He looked straight back at the doctor unflinching. If he'd turned to look at me or his mum we would've both started blubbing. Took it well did little man.

We just don't know what to expect from chemotherapy.

I'll post regular updates on here. First step is the operation on Thursday.

  • Hi ashm welcome to the forum, so sorry about your son, thank you for keeping us updated on how things are going, the ladies come on any time depending what they are doing in today, hope everything goes well best wishes.

    Billy

  • Thanks Billy hooe things are going well with you. I haven't read through all the posts there are so many, how many people are on this particular thread?

Also any insights into the effects of chemo- the good and the bad would be appreciated.

  • Hi I'm afraid it depends on type and strength of cemo, but main side effects are normally feeling or being sick, aches and pains all over, pins and neadles hands and feet, sometimes there are no side effects at all,, it depends on pacient, and treatment, I'm afraid that's all I can tell you. Again best wishes.

    Billy

  • Thanks Mate, will certainly try to keep this thread updated with his treatment and progress

  • Hi Ashem

a warm welcome to the thread and so sorry to hear about your son.

There are a number of people on the thread who drop in and out... a few have undergone chemo.... hopefully some will post soon.

I had op and radiotherapy for my cancer - I didn’t have chemo.

Billy has summed up my knowledge already. The saying for treatment is everyones experience is different.

Some it sideswipes them nd others manage to continue to go to work.. but.... they all do it.

As a parent of someone newly diagnosed your head too must be all over the place. Hang in there.... your son is in the hands of experts in their field.... it’s new to you but they have years or research and experience under their belt.

We always say live in the moment taking it one day at a time. Stop the what ifs, could have, should haves.... these thoughts will take your mind to dark places... you don’t need that in any of your lives right now.

its early days for you all... your minds will be all over the place. Personally very early on I decided all the angst in the world won’t change a thing so decided to look it in the eye and stare it down. When you are ready you too can do this.

Yes he is young but with that he brings the resilience that the young have in abundance... he can do this.

    take care x

  • Hi Sandra

Those sound like words of wisdom from someone that has gone through it so it would be folly of me to not take note of them.

One day at a time and focus on what it is that has to be done, not that which could've or should've.

    Appreciated.
