The good and the bad

Hi peeps

I have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. Taking the excellent advice on this website I pretty much started by taking it one day at a time. This does indeed help.

I thought to share the good and the bad and would love to hear anyone else's should they wish to share.

Today I had both a good and a bad moment. I received 2 letters in the post.

The first was from the hosp confirming my op date (my bad moment) cos my stomach dropped and I had that now familiar feeling of anxiousness take hold for a moment but shook it off cos I know it is needed.

The good - my 2nd letter - as if... a tax rebate - boom  . Not half put a much needed smile on my face . Reckon a my treat family meal is in order.

Eeee it's the little things ain't it.

Take care peeps

    Hi Sandra,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I am sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. You are doing well by trying to cope one day at a time. The first letter you received today wasn't so bad.. It is going to remove the cancer in your breast and give you the chance to live a normal life once all this treatment is over, so the sooner you start the sooner you'll be finished with it all. The second was a definite bonus.

What surgery are you going to have - a lumpectomy or a mastectomy?

I have had 2 bouts of primary breast cancer. The first was diagnosed 7 years ago and the second the following year. Have you got a treatment plan in place post-surgery?

Please stay in touch. Remember, there is always someone here whenever you feel like talking.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine.

    Thanks for the reply.

I have 2 small lumps in my R breast (no one can feel them nor is there any outward change to be seen nor pain. Caught on routine screening).

They are grade 1 and grade  2 both invasive cancers. On MRI my lymph nodes look clear.

I am having a lumpectomy on the 21st as a day case. They are hoping to make 1 incision to get to both but will re assess on day. They are also taking 2 sentinel nodes for biopsy just in case.

After the op all things being equal I am to have radiotherapy mon to fri for 3 wks.

Wow how matter of fact does it all sound in the written word when it is so not.

7yrs post diagnosis - I tip my hat to you Jolamine. When we are first diagnosed it's like our lives ended in that moment. This is so not true "living with Cancer" never a truer word.

    take care Jolamine

  • Go u treating yourself u deserve it:-)

let us know how u get on at docs tomorrow... will b thinking of u x

  • Wow Sandra. I love you got an allocated chair!!!! My daughter's have been amazing. One was with me on day I got results as my partners uncle was getting buried that day so I made him go. I'm learning fast that a positive attitude and treats to look forward to are the way to beat what this thing wants to do to your spirit. I just hope I keep this up and it's not just a big front with nothing to back it up lol x

  • Yup chair... it’s tough up North u know lol.

Ah my daughter was with me when I got my results too... then other daughter took a wks leave to b with me after op ( which apparently meant she was chauffeur to the pub that wk... a lot lol).

You wring out with both hands every moment of joy to be had you and yours deserve it x

    Hi Nikki,

Oh boy did I feel tired!

I didn't sleep well at night.  Between night sweats and, my mind going into overdrive in the early hours of the morning, I felt as if I was walking in a trance. However I fell asleep on any form of transport, or when trying to watch TV.

Eight years on I am still tired, but not as totally exhausted as I used to be and can now manage a short journey without falling asleep. I still have to pace myself if I want to do anything on a particular day.

    It's a drawback, but it's liveable with.

I wonder how others feel. Has the tiredness stayed with you, or did you eventually get rid of it?

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I have been through so much for this past year. Diagnosed twice with breast cancer in both breasts. 2016 September had a partial mastectomy and 5 weeks of radiotherapy. September 2017 diagnosed again with invasive cancer in the second breast and had a complete mastectomy.  Age 63 and so tired

The bad...reading  with a heavy heart all the new people posting on here. The pain of coming to terms with diagnosis is so palpable in everyone’s written word I can almost touch it:-(

The good... the people posting on here giving support to others is heart lifting. Some still in the midst of it “all” and the ones years after the “event” and still coming on here to show others what can b achieved.

Have as good a day as you can everyone x
