Healing Complications after Sarcoma Resection last month

Hi

Anyone on here suffered any internal wound healing complications after resection? I had a sarcoma removed from my inner thigh last month and within days of being discharged from hospital my vacudrain bottle became blocked and an internal infection set in. I had five weeks of radiotherapy before surgery and am told this had contributed to my healing difficulties.

I was hospitalised again for over 3 weeks and put on an IV drip for the anti biotics then discharged with oral anti biotics. My surgeon said after four or so weeks that I could stop taking them. However, over the weekend the leg has become full of fluid, tight, hot and painful so I guessed straight away that the infection had returned.

I am now back on anti biotics for a further two weeks, but I am sceptical that this is going to sort matters out. The scar has healed beautifully - the issues are all underlying and the wound stretches from groin to just above my knee so it's a big area that's infected.

I'm desperate for any insight here from anyone that has suffered similar? I'm beginning to feel very depressed as my mobility is limited and I now realise I have severe complications and it is likely to take months to heal.

    Hello Labrat,

    Welcome to Cancer Chat.

I am sorry to hear about the recurrent problems you have been having post-surgery. You may find that oral antibiotics are not strong enough to heal this up. Sometimes you need to resort to intravenous antibiotics, which are stronger, but this would involve another stay in hospital. Don’t be too timid about this. If your leg is still red and tight, hot and painful, you must get this healed up before it becomes more serious.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you whenever you feel like talking.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
