Overweight but should I try to diet?

I am a tall person and overweight but not obese.I have breast cancer metastasized to the spine.Recently hospital doctors sent a letter asking me to attend for weighing, infusion of antibiotic prior to a procedure. They said that I would need this because of my weight.Do I interpret that as meaning that I'm overweight but should I go on a reducing diet while under treatment?

    Hi Penna,

Welcome to Cancer Chat, although I'm sorry that you have to join us here. I would ask your care team about dieting before you start.

I have had two bouts of primary breast cancer and became very overweght with all the medication I'd been taking. I was referred to a 'Weigh to go' class at my local gym for 10 weeks. This was free of charge for the first 10 weeks and I now have to pay £2.60 a week for it. This is not about dieting but sensible eating. I am weighed each week and my waist is measured every other week. We then have a discussion about all aspects of eating both at home or when eating out, how to choose healthy options, what food to limit, how to prepare a balanced meal, portion sizes, etc. After that we have an hour of exercises.

This has been extremely helpful. In the year and a half that I have been doing this I have lost 5 stone. My husband has other health issues, but he has been able to come along too and we have both benefitted from this. I wouldn't want to diet as such, because it is important to try and eat well when you are fighting cancer. I still have more weight to lose, but by doing it this way, the weight seems to be staying off.

Your GP should know if there is something similar in your local area. What treatment have you had or are you having and how are you getting on with your cancer journey so far?

Please keep us in the loop. There is always someone here for you whenever you want to talk.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
