Hospital Administration

Having had all my treatment for anal cancer .on my last day of radiotherapy  I was told that my appointment  for 5wk follow up was already made and in the post ..While in the hospital  for my 5 days chemo I met up another woman that was just starting her treatment for the same cancer (I was on my last week) we remained friends and keep in touch . As she finshed her last treatment  she got her appointment  fir the 22st September  .on hearing this I wondered why it was but I still hadn't  received  my appointment  .so I contacted the hospital  I was on the phone for 45min I got no sense from anyone I repeated my story 5  to 4 different  hospitals . At this point I was losing my cool .. I got a telephone number  for my doctors pa I rang her only to be told that because my appointment  was with another hospital  I had to ring them at this point I really lost my cool . I told her I wasn't going to ring anyone I'd take my chances and just live my life and hope . At this point she said oh leave it with me I will sort it .. my appointment  came though 25 Sept  this is  another 5 wks to wait for my results .I rang the appointment to see if I could have another one earlier than this my answer was a NO  I have already waited 5 wks wondering of I'm clear (having had a friend who now drying as his cancer as come back )it's something  I  need to know ..what hurts the most is the fact if I hadn't rang up I would have been forgotten about .lost in the system .. I feel so let down and hurt by this .Having had such great treatment  by the hospital  and then they go and do this .

  • Hi,

Sorry to read that you've been messed about so much.

Your GP may be able to help either get your appointment brought forward or obtain your results for you. Ideally the hospital would have given you the contact details of a named nurse who you can ring with any queries. You could also write to your consultant, explain the situation and ask for your results to be given to you asap. The Consultant is probably blissfully unaware that you've been left in the dark.

Meanwhile, have you thought about raising a formal complaint in writing to the atrust's Chief Executive? At the very least this will make sure that the local managers are made aware that there are issues with their admin processes and help stop this happening to someone else. They will assume that all is well if no-one makes a complaint and they are obliged to respond to all formal complaints. One of my roles before I retired was to sit on an NHS Trust's committee which looked at all the formal complaints and check that appropriate actions had been taken to stop the same mistakes from being repeated. The vast majority of admin errors were caused by people assuming someone else had contacted the patient, especially when more than one organisation was involved in their care.

    Best wishes

    Dave

  • Put it thro PALS, they have to deal with it.

  • Sadly, I wouldn't trust PALS. They are not independent and they generally report to (and are line managed by) a Director well below CEO level within any Trust. Typically by an Assistant Director of Clinical or Corporate Governance who then reports to the Director of Nursing and Governance who then reports to the CEO. Individuals in each PALS service do their best, but they are often severely constrained and frustrated by the management structure they sit within.

The CEO carries the can for the whole Trust and his or her awareness of a complaint from the outset can help a lot. Not least because they can't hide behind the excuse of "no-one escalated this to me". I'm speaking here as both as a retired NHS manager and as an individual who has been through the entire process on behalf of my disabled son whose treatment was less than satisfactory for a while.

  • This is terrible treatment,  we had a scan three weeks ago before radiotherapy began, we have no idea if it has shrunk more.  Hubby doesn't want to know until treatment is complete.   You should have a dedicated nurse,  call her they answer you straight away or call you back.  Being given the run around is not something you should be dealing with.   I am of the same opinion about PALS, they are not independent and in my opinion just tick boxes.  Good luck with all the advice you have received from other forum users.
