Hello from Annielizzie

Hi folks.  I was diagnosed with rectal cancer at the beginning of June and I am now nearly six weeks post operative following an anterior resection of the bowel.  I was disappointed to find that the cancer had spread to lymph nodes and so I am awaiting chemo therapy with Folfox.  I am almost more apprehensive about starting chemo that I was about the operation but I understand that everyone reacts differently and I will just have to wait and see.  I wonder what experiences other people have had with this combination of drugs and also how long it took to get out of the system once the cycles have stopped.  I am having 12 cycles every 2 weeks, so basically 6 months. Thank you for reading.

  • Hello Annielizzie, I had rectal cancer in 2012. I had the same surgery as you. After 2 days on Folfox, I could not tolerate it due to its interference with my heart rhythm. I was then given raltitrexed and oxaliplatin. This was tolerable with a small course of steroids for the first few days of each cycle to prevent severe nausea. I had 6 months of this and got through it. Being honest it took me about 2 years to overcome fatigue symptoms. I have some neuropathy in my feet and my fingers but this does not cause me any problems. I have accepted it.I feel the chemo was an added precaution and wanted to throw everything I could at it to ensure best possible chances of survival. I don't think many people have the problem with Folfox that I did. I wish you all the best and hope you cope well with the treatment and go on into the future healthy and cancer free.
