Letrozole

I have been prescribed letrozole and I have been told I will need to take it for 5 years. I'm 65, diagnosedwith breast cancer in April 17,  grade 1 and DCIS, no lymph nodes involved. I'm not particularly happy about taking this medication and would ask if anyone on this site has good experience of this medication.

    Hi, I am 51, I had a stage 2 ductal invasive tumour with 3 lymph nodes positive. I was put on the same drug as yourself. It stopped the tumour from getting any bigger while my surgery was arranged. I start chemo this week. I have been told I have to carry on taking the tablet for 5/10 years. The only side effect I have is hot flushes and sweats. My cancer nurse said this will settle down after about 6 months.i hope this has been of some help.

    Hi Beverly, thank you for your response. It is the list of side effects that really worry me and on line on the various forums it all sounds quite scary, so I'm hoping to get more up to date and positive feed back on here and your info is certainly on the more positive side, so thank you very much for your reply. I wish you well for your treatment and recovery.

    Hi I am 61 now and I have been taking them for 4 years now I find them ok as I am o so many drugs as one mores fine to me, so don't worry about taking them, think of the plus side that you are still here to be able to take them, sorry if you take that the wrong way x

    Hi and thank you for your message.  The list of side effects are so daunting that to hear from someone who is finding them okay is such good news. I have not miss understood what you have said and I am grateful, but I guess like everyone who's had this diagnosis the shock and lifestyle changes can be a rollercoaster of emotions.  I wish you well and thank you.     Hi am deb I have breast cancer since 2010 I have had my breast removed  had chemo and radiotherapy then spent on tomaxfan. For five years then put on leterole  all I can say is it's all worth it seeing my family happy  me too

    Hi Deb, thank you for your reply, I'm glad to hear you are doing well on letrozole, it makes me feel more positive about taking it. The diagnosis of breast cancer is such a life changer it's sometimes hard to manage those changes. Best wishes to you. Sue

    I wondered how long you took Letrozole before you felt any better?

    My mother has secondary breast cancer cells in the lining of her lung and I think this is the medication she has been taking for about 5 weeks - she doesn't feel very well at all and today the hospital have advised her to stop taking the tablets until she next sees the consultant - so I've found my way here looking for some information!

    Hi Verify, thank you for your message. I haven't started taking the letrozole yet. I start my 3rd week of radiotherapy today and should start the medication on the 19th of August, I'm not particularly happy about taking this medication for 5 years as the side effects seems rather severe. Sorry I cannot offer you any positive feedback and I hope your mother feels better soon. Sue x

    Thanks Sue - I understand your hesitation but I suppose you have to see if the benefits outweigh the risks - I hope you don't suffer any side effects & also feel better soon x
