Told yesterday that I will be starting weekly iv 5FU for 6 months for stage 2 bowel cancer.
What have been people's experiences of being on this sort of chemo! I am feeling anxious about possible side effects.
Thanks,
jo

5FU is a very old drug now, once i've finished my main chemo i will just been on 5FU for a year for maintenance chemo. I currently have it along with Oxiliplatin and follonic acid with 5FU this makes up the FOLFOX chemo name.
I believe i have 5FU pumped in me initially via syringe and then i wear a small round pump (round container not electric or anything) that is connected to my picc line. This goes into me over a 46 hour period. It can make the bowels very leaky and it did with me but i cannot say exactly what other side effects 5FU causes due to being on the other two drugs for my stage 4 bowel cancer.
hi jo,
I read your post and wanted to ask how it went for you? I am in a similar position- about to start 6 months of 5fu. I had surgery to remove my tumour last month and that went well - no lymph node infection but the histology showed some stray cancer cells (EMVI), hence the chemotherapy.
needless to say, I am feeling pretty anxious. I am an otherwise fit and healthy 54 year old man.
any tips or guidance welcome!
thanks
