can you be sectioned and be ill physically
Hi Rockstar
Yes you can be sectioned, The first time that I met my oncologist I told her that life wasn't worth living like I was at that time,
On the Monday I had buried my best friend who died from bowel cancer, the other 4 weekdays that week I had attended different hospitals for tests, Between travelling to and from hospitals and the various consultations I had spent 4 full days at the hospitals, She immediately turned to my husband and told him that she had just heard me threaten to commit suicide and that she was duty bound to get me sectioned,
My husband and l both told her that I had in no way referred to suicide but to quality of life,
We then had an extremely scary few minutes until she backed down, but this was the last thing that I needed to happen when I was in the early stages of dealing with a cancer diagnosis,
Hope this helps,
Kind regards,

Hi again,
Probably not the best forum on which to ask a Mental Health question but by coincidence I know a little about the Mental Health Act. This link may help answer your questions and MIND deals with these sort of questions all the time. www.mind.org.uk/.../
Generally being detained under a Section of the Mental Health Act 1983 is done as a very last resort when a person is a danger to themself and/or others and refuses to accept treatment for a severe and enduring Mental Health condition or is behaving in a public place in a manner which makes a police officer believe they are a danger to themselves or others. In this last case, they are taken to a place of safety for up to 72 hours where they can be assessed by mental health professionals.
People with a mental health condition can have physical illnesses the same as anyone else, but sometimes their behaviour can mask the physical symptoms. On the other hand, severe anxiety can also cause physical symptoms.
Best wishes
Dave
