Prostate cancer

Hi my hubby has been diagnosed with stage 4 Prostate  cancer. He's just finishing 6th and final chemo. Been told he's to have 8 weeks of radiotherapy, how will this affect him?

  • Hello there.

I can't advise you on how it will affect your hubby but my ex partner did have prostate cancer but not at this stage.

What I was thinking is that my partner had a specialist nurse and I think they call them key workers now, they should be able to help you and they used to have meetings where wives, partners, relatives - in fact anyone could go to and discuss anything that was of concern with others affected by the same thing.

I have just been diagnosed with advanced bowel cancer myself and haven't started treatment yet, but my key worker has given me a list of numbers, organisations etc. that are there to help, like MacMillan, Cancer helplines etc. Try his key worker first, if not, try the prostate cancer organisation or the cancer organisation.  There should be someone available to help with one of them - even on Bank Hols.  There's lots of info online.

Hope you can find someone to give you some help and I wish you and your hubby all the best.  We were lucky - although he's my ex, he's still a very good friend and that's 11 years after he had prostate cancer.

    Good luck.  xx

  • Hi

like your husband I am a T4 which as they say is incurable but treatable, I had chemotherapy, hormone and radiotherapy, very hard on the body, I was fairly lucky with my radiotherapy, I had twenty sessions over four weeks, out of this I had two really bad days ( which was diahorrea ) and not bad the rest, it does drain you a bit, you get more tired than usual but this is expected, it affects us all differently, but mostly it is a good thing, the radiologists always ask have you had any problems,if so there's a nurse there ready to help, never be afraid to ask there always ready to help and have heard everything so your dignity is always respected.

best of luck to your husband

  • Hi Joe

thanks for the info, hubby is to have 37 fractions over 71/2 weeks. I'm thinking that it will be tiring but not as bad as the last 6 months of chemo. Was told it cld affect is bowel and bladder so I suppose diarrhoea is the result. Hubby is mentally strong so hopefully that will help get him through this.

Hope your treatment is successful and you are on the road to getting stronger.

  • Hi

The radiotherapy is easy to get through and the radiographer will look after your husband, their very good and it only takes about ten to fifteen minutes per session except on the Friday were they do a short scan that lasts five minutes before the radiotherapy, certain he will do ok, makes you go to the loo a bit more buyers should be used to that.

I am doing ok good days are few but I am still here and ready to fight when I need to.

    Hope all goes well

    Joe
