Problems with portal vein embolization

I had a PVE last Thursday and  had expected to go home on Friday.  Sadly there was a rare bleed and I experienced a lot of pain. Also I have a horrible taste in my mouth and don't feel hungry. I am now recovering at my sister's home but am very weak and still in pain in my shoulder and side. I am told the procedure took two hours.  I have had lots of morphine injections and antibiotics which have helped. Has anyone else had this problem as it is making me anxious about the next procedure to remove the cancer in the bile duct.  I am 72 and fairly active, usually, and fit

  • Hello Ethane,

Welcome to Cancer Chat! I am sorry to hear you are having issues following PVE. Make sure you mention all these issues to the medical team that looked after you so that they can keep an eye on how you are recovering. If you want to have a chat about this with our cancer nurses, don't hesitate to ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

We have some useful information on our website on surgery to remove bile duct cancer which includes a section on portal vein embolisation. You can read more about this here.

I hope you will also meet others on the forum who have had a similar procedure and that you can share stories and experiences.

    Best wishes,

    Lucie, Cancer Chat Moderator
