Breast cancer with bone mets

I am in my 5th year of bilateral lobular breast cancer with bone mets... I had chemo and then radiotherapy to kill my ovaries off.. I am on letrozole.  I was also on 4 weekly Denosumab injections for my bones but have been off them for a year due to osteonecrosis of the jaw.  This is a rare side effect of the injections.. I am under a maxilliofacial consultant but nobody seems to know what treatment to give me!!! There is apparently very little data on treatment... Is there anybody else that has suffered with ONJ and had successful treatment???? I must say other than the ONJ I am feeling great.. I am at work 36 hours a week and I look after my 3 young grandchildren... So life is great and I feel very lucky xxxxx

  • Welcome to the forum Liana.

I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing the rare side effect of osteonecrosis due to your denosumab injections. I hope other members who have been in this situation will reply soon but in the meantime maybe you could give our cancer nurses a call and chat with them about this in more detail? If you're in the UK you can call them for free on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Apart from the ONJ I'm glad that you are feeling great but I have my fingers crossed that your medical team are able to decide upon a course of action soon.

Do come back and update us when you have found out more.

    All the best,

  • Hello Liana H

I just wanted to say hello and sorry that you're having that rare side effect. I had breast cancer in 2013 and  now have bone mets and seem to be on the same  treatment to you. The team mentioned the possible side effects of a jaw problem but I don't know any more about it - wish I could help you!

I just wanted to say hello really as i'm in a similar boat to you and  if I can be of any help in the future? On the whole I'm feeling OK and hope that they decide what treatment to give you soon ..

Take care and please let me know what they decide to do . Thanks. Take care x
