kidney cancer

Hi , I have 10cm tumour which is cancer on my left kidneyand i have to have open surgery due to the size , could anyone tell me how long the operation is and length of time spent in hospital, thanks

  • I'm sorry to hear you have a 10cm tumour on your left kidney Rose but it's good that surgery is an option to remove it. I see you have some questions about the type of surgery you're having so I just wanted to pop by and give you our cancer nurses telephone number as they may be able to help you with this. If you're in the UK you can call them for free on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I hope this helps and that your surgery goes well when the time comes.

    All the best,

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I am one of the cancer nurses and have been asked by our moderator Steph if there is anything we might be able to add to your post.

I’m afraid I can’t tell you how long your surgery will last for as this needs to come from your surgeon. Perhaps you could ask this question when you go for your preoperative assessment ( if you’ve not been already) or if you know which ward you are going to be admitted to, you can ring them to find out.

People can vary in their recovery following surgery so it’s difficult to be very specific about how long you will be in hospital for but according to the organisation Kidney Cancer UK  the average time spent in hospital is between 4 to 10 days.

You may find our information on kidney cancer useful and you can access this via this link.

I hope your surgery goes well. If you would like to speak to one of the nurses directly, you can telephone us on 0808 800 4040. We are here from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
