Bone cancer in mums arm

My mum had lung cancer 2 years ago but it has now returned plus travelled to lymph nodes so shes gonna need futher treatment. She had a bad fall just before xmas and broke her arm as it wernt healing like it should be she was sent for a mri scan and was told today that the cancer is in her arm (pathological fracture) and needs urgent radiotherapy shes loosing weight fast at the min is 5 stone 13. If it wernt for the fall the cancer in her arm wouldnt have been found out in just worried it could be else where in the body as shes not been offered a full body scan. Are we allowed to request a body scan or is that choice down to drs

  • Hello Emma83,

I am so sorry your poor mum has secondary bone cancer in her arm and that this was discovered after her fall.

As you are understandably worried after what happened, it wouldn't be unreasonable to discuss the possibility of a full body scan with her medical team and you could explain why you want to make sure that there is no further spread. They will be able to advise you on what the best course of action is.

Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm so don't hesitate to give them a call if you want to talk things through with them. They will be able to tell you more about the process of getting scan referrals.

    Best wishes,

  • So sorry to hear about your mum, I have bone cancer I was diagnosed in 2013. I think you should ask for a full body scan, I am surprised they haven't done one already. I went with pains in my upper arm after a fall and after having a bone scan they found it in several other parts of the body as well. This had come from the breast which I had removed in 1999.

I have had lots of treatment chemo tablets, a shot of radiotherapy and other treatments but get along fine  day to day. Good luck to your mum.xx

  • So sorry to hear about ur mum, I too have have cancer in my bones which started in my rib, previously having, breast cancer, 10 years ago, I was concerned about weight loss, although I could do with it, my concern was the weight on my bones, I have changed my diet, hardly any meat, lots of organic fresh produce, little and often and really eating what I fancy,, this seems to help, especially chopped up pots of fruit.

Hope this helps and hugs xx

  • Thanks for replying it is the not knowing if its gone anywhere else that is quite hard to deal with as we know she has to have radiotherapy on her arm before an operation to fix it and then from there its the lung and lymph nodes but as they are on halt till her arm is sorted just makes it harder to think she will be able to beat it

  • I think my mum is the opposite as she was 8 stone 3 month ago and on her last weigh in on friday she had dropped to 5 stone 13 which is quite concerning
