Essential thrombocythemia

Not sure if I'm posting in the right forum but have been taking oral chemotherapy for over 3 years now - thinking it was to reduce my high platelets to avoid  Strokes etc. Have only just found out that this is a type of blood cancer... I see my haematologist every 3 months for a check up - cancer was never mentioned, my own gp thinks it's possible that I couldn't have taken it in when I was told overv3 years ago. There have been 4 different haematologists at the hospital in the time I've been there. I'm seeing her in 2 weeks, hopefully she can explain more to me. All I know is I'm very frightened - can anyone help me please. Thankyou so much.

  • Thank you, I have started to keep a log of my symptoms,  I've been nursing 13 years and had 1 episode of sickness in all that time and 2 maternity leaves, I'm not one for being ill don't get me wrong I have the odd moan when my back aches or I have painful periods but this feels different and I'm drained. My manager is being fab but I can't go on feeling this way. I was made to feel today because I'm young in not a concern and how I feel is not a concern either. Hopefully I will start to feel better. I have 4 days off so see if relaxing abit more helps.

  • Hello Joey 87

I am sad that you feel you are 'not a concern'. but at least they will update in 6 weeks.  You say you were 'advised to take aspirin' - does that mean they have prescribed for you on a regular basis.  From others in this forum, it would appear that is the first step of treatment.

When you saw your GP, were you given any other checks apart from blood tests.  You are obviously experiencing a general feeling of malaise and need reassurance that, apart from raised platelet levels, the rest of your body is functioning normally.

I know that, as a nurse, you will have been taught to evalute a patient's needs and plan the next steps in their care, so perhaps, when you have a moment to yourself over Christmas, you could make yourself a plan of action - how to manage how you are feeling (and if possible, do it), who and when to contact for further advice and checks if that is what you decide you need.

In the meantime, I hope you and your family have a loving and peaceful Christmas.

  • I had a range of bloods and nothing else concerning come up, all within normal ranges other than my Platelets, I had no observations or physical examination, no top to toe assessment. The consultant haematologist just said to buy some and start taking low dose, which is what I have done. I just want to feel me again, I'm 35 but feel so much older!

    Merry Christmas to you too.

  • Hi Joey, welcome on board and merry festive greetings to one and all over the holidays

I hope the rest period has given you a chance to get back some strength and refocus

I was 30 with a one year old when diagnosed after 18 months of poking and prodding. The platelets level is affecting your body and mind strength.

As a health worker myself you are aware of what is unique to a patient in their body strength and weaknesses

At your next appointment as already advised go with a plan of action explaining what is your priority and needs to improve your body's health and strength to give you a fighting chance in your work live balance.

When your platelets levels start to normalise you will feel an improvement

All the best and look after yourself ️

  • Thank you, I agree. I have a 4 year old and a 10 year old too, my husband has been great though and has been doing more around the house and has been doing the morning school runs so that helps. I feel like ai want to sit down but then the pins and the needles start!

I have been resting over Christmas but I don't feel any better for it, we went for a walk and I had a 2 hour nap when we got back. I am hoping that I will be listened to a bit more with a face to face appointment.

  • Hi I was diagnosed yesterday and I'm very confused. She said I could have the bone marrow test done but I don't have to. What would I gain by having this?

  • Hey, welcome

Although mildly painful on the day a bone marriage test is best to give you a bespoke treatment plan and a baseline of your current levels and biopsy to measure against when you continue to be seen as an outpatient monitoring your levels. The consultant can also explain what other tests can be used on marrow biospy so please ask for a fully informed decision

    Good luck

  • Hi Fletchallum

I agree with NM9309, a short test to affirm the diagnosis did reassure me.  I went into a side room at the clinic and was asked to lay on my stomach and relax.  That was over 20 years ago and I have been treated with medication ever since.  I used to see the Consultant in the Haematology Clinic, then during Covid, after blood tests, I had a phone conversation with a Clinical Nurse Specialist every 4 months, so that repeat medication could be issued.  In the last year, this has changed again in that, I attend my doctor's surgery for a blood test and a few days later, t am sent the next 4 months of meds. I know this must sound like long-distance doctoring, but my count is stable and, if I were concerned about anything, I know my own doctor would listen and take any action necessary.

Keep in contact and let us know how you get on.
