Essential thrombocythemia

Not sure if I'm posting in the right forum but have been taking oral chemotherapy for over 3 years now - thinking it was to reduce my high platelets to avoid  Strokes etc. Have only just found out that this is a type of blood cancer... I see my haematologist every 3 months for a check up - cancer was never mentioned, my own gp thinks it's possible that I couldn't have taken it in when I was told overv3 years ago. There have been 4 different haematologists at the hospital in the time I've been there. I'm seeing her in 2 weeks, hopefully she can explain more to me. All I know is I'm very frightened - can anyone help me please. Thankyou so much.

  • Im pleased to hear you had no storm related damage, yes spring is in the air. Especially today was beautiful outside.

I always take on board your experience in this matter, and always so grateful for your wonderful help.

    Will keep you updated

    Thanks

  • Morning All,

I managed to get through the BMB. Felt like being at the dentist. With more pressure involved. I just squeezed the nurse's hand.

Very strange sensation, but so relieved I have done it. Fingers crossed results which should take 7-10 days will be positive.

Anaesthetic wearing off now, so feels a tad tender. Paracetamol by my side.

Also started my hydroxycarbamide this morning, so hopefully platelets over next 4 weeks will start to go down.

Thank you all for being there, this forum is a great help.

  • Well done Mark.  It sounds as though my description of the procedure was about right - at least you did have a nurse's hand to squeeze!

Once the hydroxycarbamide (I do wish there was a shorter name for it!) has done its job, you will begin to plan - not for your next medical appointment, but for your next trip out with your wife and your children.  Even if you may not share your recent worries with them, they will know that something has been mightily bothering you and a smile and fun with them will reassure them.  You will also have unconsciously taught them how to deal with worrying things and how to overcome setbacks.

I am also so glad that you 'talked' about your worries.  More often than not, you will find that others have dealt with the same thing.  So hug your wife and get on with your life!!

  • Morning All,

A month ago I had a bone marrow biopsy and yesterday after waiting 4 weeks, I received the long awaited call.

My bone marrow is all good, nothing untoward happening!! Was such a great relief to hear this.

My diagnosis of Essential Thrombocythemia Cal R + is now confirmed.

I will continue hydroxycarbamide to get my platelets down to 400, and then have medication adjusted to keep at this level. Learn to live with this condition.

Thank you all for your responses, over the last few months.

I will continue to help others, through this site and again if need any more questions answered will post.

    Keep safe, keep positive

Thanks to you all, and of course Maureen x

  • Well done Mark

Stay safe and best wishes for healthier future

  • So glad to hear that and you sound so much more 'together'.  Fear of the unknown is often so much harder to deal with than the reality.

I am glad I was able to be a bit of help and hope you and your family have a glorious summer, filled with fun.

  • Morning All,

Today I received a letter inviting me to hospital for an appointment.

Have confirmed with my haematologist this is just for a second opinion, regarding my diagnosis. But also that I am on hydroxycarbamide to reduce my platelets.

Has anyone else been referred further up the haematology chain of command?

Is this anything to be worried about?

    Thanks

    Mark

  • Hi Mark Please do not worry about it.  It is always good when the medics feel they need to double check anything - it means they are really looking at you as a person.  Let us know what happens.

  • Hi Maureen

Just a worry, as last week I was advised my bloods ok and also bone marrow was fine.

Just wish my consultant had mentioned that I may receive a letter from the Hospital.

Anyway thanks again, will keep you posted.
