Tonsil cancer

Hi I am 46 and was diagnosed with tonsil cancer last year after a lump appeared on the left side of my neck. I have since had 3 surgeries, one to remove the miss diagnosed lump on my neck( ent consultant thought it was a cyst). After discovering his mistake I was referred to Aintree hospital where I had a PET scan, which confirmed cancer in my left tonsil. Second surgery to remove it and a third to remove more tissue to get a better margin. I have recently had my first appointment with oncologist, result of which will be 6 weeks radiotherapy 5 days a week. I go next week for a mask to be made, scans and dental. I know it sounds stupid but worried about teeth they're not great but not total disaster, have tried to get back to dentists but as I hadn't been for over a year I'm off their books and nobody seems keen to take me on due to cancer treatment. Also worried about side effects of radiotherapy. I've managed to stay off Google since It said I was dying when I found out I was stage IVb, my cancer surgeon told me off for looking and said they have a really good chance of curing it due to the fact it only ever spread to the 1 initial lymph gland and I have no other nodal activity. The HPV 16 virus was also present which they see as a good thing. Just wondering if anyone has had anything similar and any tips on coping with radiotherapy would be much appreciated. Thanks shell x

  • Hi Shelly

Sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis and it sounds like youre about to start the journey we were beginning exactly this time last year. My husband was diagnosed with tonsil cancer which had spread to his lymphnodes in his neck on December 8th 2015 and began his treatment on February 8th 2016. He had 5 cycles of chemo and 30 fractions of VMAT radiotherapy . I will send you a friend request so we can chat about our experiences / tips that git us through if you like. Best wishes Emma
