Hair thinning/loss from Hormone Therapy drug Letrozole

I have been on Letrozole for nearly a month and my hair is changing and thinning badly, which I find distressing. The worst thing is that I could be on this drug for 5-10 yrs . Was trying to mentally prepare for the chemotherapy and the side effects and thinking , look on bright side , after the chemotherapy my hair will grow back.

Has anybody got experience of the side effect of this drug and advice.

  • Ah thanks jolamine I hope you're okay. I will definitely let you know when I get any news from the specialist. At the moment I'm trying nioxin dry clean spray it's like a dry shampoo but better for your hair than others. Mind yourself and take care. X

  • Hi, my mum has been on this for a year and her hair was very thin after a few months. After around 6-9 months it started growing back thick, and now her hair is thicker than before with slight curls! It is a short term side effect.

  • Hi Jane,

I switched from Letrozole to Femara (slightly different). Femara is more expensive I was told. I am not getting the hair breakages as much now. I recently had issues with an itchy scalp which may have been due to a hot dry atmosphere at night having a multi fuel stove on- who knows! But I stopped using heated products or hair clamps in my hair and used baby shampoo. I think this has helped give the hair a rest. It certainly doesn't do any harm to reduce the stress in your hair. Good luck, it just takes time. I've been on Femara for 18 MTHS now and find it ok.

    Hi Jane,

Here's hoping that Nioxin works as well for you as it has for TrishF's mum. I look forward to hearing what your specialist has to say.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Trish,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

Thank you for your feedback. I'm glad to hear that Nioxin helped your mum. Perhaps it will help others too?

    Kind regards,

  • Hi all

Just been reading an article tonight about champo hair products and reviews from people who are using it are pretty good. Expensive like many others are but thinking of giving it a try. The thinning is definitely not stopping....coming up to 4 years in October since I started so 6 years to go. I am concerned....

  • Hi Lara,

I stopped taking Letrozole in July 2017 and am still having problems with my scalp. There is no sign of dandruff or Psoriasis, yet all of the products that I have been prescribed have been for these conditions and have only made the itching worse and the scalp very tender. It is often bad enough to wake me from my sleep.

I have just been advised to try Salcura anti-itch shampoo for this. I have tried many different preparations to make my hair look less lack-lustre, some of them are mentioned in previous posts on this thread, but in all honesty, I couldn't really recommend any of them. Some seemed to work to start with, but never really worked long-term. I am still loosing more hair than I ever did before I started on hormone therapy.

Sorry that I cannot be of more help, but please let us know if you find anything.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Jolamine

thank you so much for the lots of info as always

it seems like hormone tablets go hand in hand with scalp and hair isssues after a few months funny you saying about itchy scalp I had this a lot last weekend wasn't sure it it was the dry shampoo but this has continued . My head feels sore .

I'm going to try giving my heir a break from heat and hair products for a few weeks also to see if this helps .

    Love Lara ️

  • Hi Lara,

I found that the best thing I've done to make my hair look as if it's got some life in it, is to add highlights. I'm not sure if this is making the scalp feel worse or not, but it does look much better. Some of the more recent products I've tried have had Cortico steroids in them. This is what seems to have made the scalp sore. I haven't used heat on my hair for over 30 years.

Please let us know how you get on with your new hair regime.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
