Hair thinning/loss from Hormone Therapy drug Letrozole

I have been on Letrozole for nearly a month and my hair is changing and thinning badly, which I find distressing. The worst thing is that I could be on this drug for 5-10 yrs . Was trying to mentally prepare for the chemotherapy and the side effects and thinking , look on bright side , after the chemotherapy my hair will grow back.

Has anybody got experience of the side effect of this drug and advice.

  • Hi Shelley,

    Glad to help.

I have read quite a bit and 4months off Letrozole is actually not that long in the bodies readjustment from these type of drugs. Sadly I understand that it can even be as long as the length of time you were taking the drug. The menopause may also have a bearing. These are the worst senario's so don't give up keep positive. Providing you still have hair growth although very fine there is a definate chance for improvement.

The long and short of it is, if you have the body in good condition the elements hair requires are made available by the body for the hair to blossom. [sorry you may know this already

Don't forget you can always ask the GP for a thyroid check any check on the elements that help the hair growth.

I am hoping to get the go ahead from my Oncologist to try the Philip Kingsley potions. This is thanks to another lady on here.

Philip Kingsley do have a help line if you look them up o the internet. As the products are quite pricey you may want to discuss the process with them.

I don't know if you have a Marks and Spencer 'sparks' card from time to time they give a 20% off  Health and Beauty which of course makes the product more attractive.

Funnily enough I was at our monthly Breast Cancer support group yesterday, I was chatting to one of the Breast Care Nurses and she is very interested in any results so that she can help other ladies.

At the moment my £3.95 Superdrug powder has given me so much confidence, if it passes my critical hawkeye then it must be ok.

But like others I want a definate fix.

The details for The Haven are :-

www.breastcancerhaven.org.uk tel 0300 0120 112, if you can't get to one of their centres there are two CD's that they can forward to you.

Anyway all the best let us know how you get on or if you want a chat.

    Kind Regards

    Jan

  • Thanks Jan and Jolamine, great advice!  I am in Scotland and there are Maggies centres up here but only in the cities, I'll try to get along to one.  I had my thyroid checked a few months back and everything was normal, like you I thought it may have something to do with my hair thinnning so I guess I just need to be patient which isn't easy.  I hope you get the go ahead to try the Philip Kinglsley products, it's certainly worth a try.......I am going to give the strand maximiser a go myself so thanks for the recommendation.  All the best x

  • Hi Shelley,

I hope all goes well for you, let us know how it works.

    HI Shelley,

I don't know whereabouts in Scotland you live, but I know that there is a Haven in Blantyre, Wishaw and Forth. Maggies Centres are in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness, Motherwell, Forth Valley, Dundee and Fife. There may be others, but these are the only ones I know about.

I hope that you find them as helpful as I did.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi,

I have been taking this drug for nearly 6 weeks, I have had the most dreadful pain in my legs and feet, The skin on my legs and feet has been peeling off in sheets, but I persevered the pain has lessened but the skin still feel odd,

I have noticed that my hair has stopped growing, after being Bald from Chemotherapy, and I have lost my eyebrows, The Tumours under my arm is still growing, and I wonder at what point it will die off, Can anyone tell me how long before the drug works?

  •

    Hi Jax,

I took Tamoxifen for 1 year and Letrozole for 6 and found that both dried my skin considerably. As far as joint pain was concerned the Letrozole was by far the worst of the two and emotionally the Tamoxifen took the prize. Use plenty of moisturiser on your legs and, if this doesn't help, contact your breast care nurse to discuss your problems. It may be that you need to change to another medication. There are a number of different ones available and, what suits one person may not suit another.

It is impossible to say how soon the treatment starts to work, as this varies from one person to another. Your consultant will usually carry out a scan after you have been on this treatment for a while to see how effective it has been.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Just following up on the Philip Kingsley products.....I purchased a set in John Lewis for £32 (inc. 20% disc) for shampoo, conditioner, elastisizer and root spray 2 weeks ago.  I have noticed an improvement in the texture of my hair but not sure if this is partly due to the effects of the letrozole finally wearing off after ceasing 5 months ago but I am happy with the results so far and would like to thank you for recommending it

    Hi Shelley,

I am glad to hear that the Philip Kingsley products seem to be working for you. However, much as your thanks are appreciated, it wasn't me who recommended them. It was Jan8.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Shelley,

I hope you had a good Christmas.

I am still in the search for more hair! My hairdresser has given me a pixie cut to try and make the loss look less obvious. She used a little amount of IQ clever dust which held onto the hair and gave it a bit of a lift which was an improvement but still a viseable scalp.

I have discovered a product called TOPPIK which is keratin filaments that cling to your own hair making the hair you have appear thicker with more body. It comes in various colours and covers the scalp very well.

Having spent pounds on various products I was reluctant to outlay another £30plus, I have found the product on eBay I am not sure if it is the genuine article as it was considerably cheaper. It works and I really do look like i have thick hair and no pink scalp showing well only an acceptable amount to look natural.

I see the Oncologist next week armed with all my research I will see if there is any help out there.

All the Best for the New Year
