hi i am new to this forum, i was diagnosed 8 years ago with marginal zone lymphoma for which i had 6 months chemotherapy

i relapsed 2 years ago and im now on a drug trial in Leeds and this seems to be keeping it at bay, i have since been diagnosed with tongue cancer and had laser surgery to remove tumour and part of my tongue, does anyone else here have tongue or oral cancer, look forward to any replies

  • Hi Liz,

i was diagnosed with tongue cancer in April this year. I had surgery to remove the rumour and rebuild my tongue as well as removing the lymph glands from my neck.  Sounds like you found yours a bit earlier than me if it was able to be lasered.

I had recovered really well after my surgery and was eating solids and all too. Slowly but I was managing it but then came the radiotherapy and it ruined everything. I'm on pretty much a liquid diet still but can manage certain soft foods. Just have to keep experimenting to find what I can and can't eat.  My main aim is to be able to eat my Christmas dinner!

How are you doing? Do you have to have anymore treatment for the tongue cancer or does the treatment you're already on cover you enough?

  • Hi Ruth thanks for your response and yes mine probably was caught earlier and I'm sorry to hear you had to have your tongue rebuilt! That was my worry but I'm glad you are getting through it although it's horrible especially the mouth an arm or leg might have been easier as that is what I thought, is this your first experience of cancer?

  • It's been the first time I've had cancer. I watched multiple family members battle it over the years. My medical team was shocked by my diagnosis because I was only 27 when I was diagnosed and have never drunk or smoked. The doctor that broke the news to me was in the verge of tears having to tell us. I was amazed that they could rebuild it. They used tissue from my left arm so in my case the cancer has kind of affected it too. Plus I have a scar on my hip where they took skin off to cover the patch they took from my arm! Mind you, I would rather have gone through the surgery again than have all the side effects from the radiotherapy!! What stage are you at in your treatment at the minute? Are you still undergoing treatment?
