Dad has to go back on Chemo......what does this mean?

Hi everyone,

My Dad was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer last Summer. We don't really talk about it much and I fel so clueless and quite helpless and left searching the internet trying to figure stuff out.

We don't live close by so I mainly talk to him on the phone. Its so swkward to ask questions and even though I want to I can never bring myself to do it.

This was what my sister sent in a text last year when I asked if she knew more than I did. My Dad had sent her this info when he was first diagnosed - T4 NO M1 Upper Rectal Grade II Adenocarcinoma with Peritoneal involvment on left side and Liver Metastases.

I don't really undertand to be honest.

Anyway, my question is - He had first round of Chemo last year, then a good break of about 3 or 4 months over Christmas time. He had another round and finished that about 4 or 5 weeks ago. I thought he would have another good break again, hopefully over Christmas, but he's just told me he has to start Chemo again next week.

What does this mean? Does it mean he's very ill?

Thansk so much xx

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat Chloe although I'm sorry to hear about your dad's diagnosis and the reason it brings you here.

That text your sister sent does sound rather complicated so I can understand why you may be feeling confused but you've come to the right place as our cancer nurses will be able to help. If you call them on 0808 800 4040 you can chat to them about your dad's situation with the chemo and discuss the text your sister sent you in more detail. The number is free to call from a UK landline and they are available Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I know there are a few members on the forum who have been in a similar situation and I hope you get to meet some of them soon.

Wishing you and your family all the best,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
