Diet and cancer

After receiving a diagnosis of bile duct cancer, I was asked "Aren't you on a special diet? Everyone with cancer is given a special diet" by a well meaning relative.

i replied that there were very many different types of cancer and each one is treated differently, with or without 'special' diets. The fact that, at the time I was feeling too ill to eat at all ,seemed not to feature in their mind.

  • Hi Bamford

It isn't until you start treatment that you realise you just have to do what is best for you.It is a battle to get my husband to decide what he can eat and then to eat in. His taste buds have completely changed, he is even eating milk chocolate which he doesn't usually touch. Eat what you can and have smaller portions so you are not over faced.

Unless people are caring for or experiencing cancer I don't think others really understand what daily struggles you face. Keep strong and try to remember it was probably her way of coping with your illness.

    Best wishes

  • Your appetite will go up and down, my first time I ate everything in sight and gained new 2 stone, 2nd time my weight stayed stable and now on a break from chemo and lost 8lbs cos I have no appetite. Just eat as and when u can. However everyone you meet will have their opinion, eg a vegan juice diet.... No thanks!!
