Life after tongue and throat cancer

hi I am new to all this so wish I had found it a while ago. I am 51 years old and last year just before my 50th birthday I was diagnosed with base tongue cancer also infected lymph nodes.I had chemotherapy and radiotherapy which ended in august last year, I had my first all clear in December what an amazing Christmas present. Now been off treatment for 14 months and I am well, but I was hoping to get back to how I used to be,but it's not happening, I know I should be thankful I am alive and I am but don't think now there is any chance of my taste buds returning, I can taste very little food I find it hard to chew and can't eat anything that is dry so every day my food consists of pasta and sauce. I used to love having a glass of wine but that has also gone it feels like it is burning my mouth. I am on 8 weeks checkups at moment and I go so low when the time is due, is this how I am going to feel for the rest of my life. Is anyone else feeling as I am

thanks in advance

  • Hi

I am a year ahead of you and reach the 5 years clear in a couple of months.

I still have the coughing reflex when I eat certain foods but not like your persistent clearing of the throat which I had originally

I did have speech therapy and was given swallowing techniques and exercises which really helped with the cough. It can be habit forming so it might help to retrain your throat with a speech therapist. Worth a try a could provide such relief.

  • Many thanks, I think you are right, it is a habit  need to try and stop. Have found some speech therapy swallowing techniques to try.

  • Great, do hope they work. I also sing in the car (when no one is listening ) which helps to control the breathing and so forget about coughing.

Good luck and best wishes for the future.

  • Hi,

I was diagnosed with SCC in very early October 2020 and had a partial glossectomy with radial forearm free flap, radical neck dissection etc.

Initial post op recovery was promising but I had problems with my tracheostomy,  These were soon resolved and I was discharged from hospital  8 days post op.  It's now been 9 weeks since my op and I have regained reasonable speech quality and have a decent swallow.  Eating is a chore though and my taste buds are not working that well.

My tongue is (in my opinion) way too big for my mouth now, and I often find myself trapping my tongue between my teeth.  I have very little sensation at the neck dissection site and the right side of my face permanently feels like I've just been to the dentist.  I've had a couple of excrutiating incidents of facial swelling which im told is likely lymphatic drainage issues.  Overall I've recovered well though and I'm thankful for the extremely quick and decisive action taken by the medical profession.  My consultant and indeed every single member of his team were outstanding.  I'm lucky to be here at all so I can put up with some drawbacks I reckon.

  • Hi I was diagnosed with tongue cancer a year ago and had the lump removed right at the back and then radiotherapy. Does your tongue feel strange still where the lump was? Mine feels so thick and lumpy and I’m so aware of it wondered if anyone felt the same.

  • Hi April, sorry I can't answer your question. I have put a post up asking for some reassurance as I have some symptoms of tongue cancer and I'm really worried. Can I ask what your symptoms were please? How long did it take for a diagnosis? I'm getting worried that my doctor and dentist have got it wrong  :( x

  • Hello .... I had base of tongue cancer last year . I'm still getting over the treatment .

I had a sore throat for almost 8 months , no earache & no sore tongue . I sometimes got sharp stabbing pains . Doctors stood up and took notice when I got lumps in my neck . I honestly think you must go now to your doctor and even better if you can afford it go private for a ent consultation. This is what I did . Still took them a while to find anything but the lumps in my neck showed something somewhere . X

please also note that if you do have base of tongue ( you may not have ) the treatment albeit horrible has a very good outcome .

Go and get this checked out .

    love Ginny x x x

  • Hi Ginny,

thankyou for taking the time to write to me. I cannot afford To go privately unfortunately! So going to have to go through all the waits alongside covid which terrifies me even more. As I said I am waiting for my ultrasound results from the lump in my neck and bloods tests, hopefully will get them back this week. Then will know more. But I am honestly freaking out as I have 3 young children. I'm petrified I am going to die from this if it is cancer!

when you say you had sore throat for 8 months was it all the time? My sore throat is barely there I just get a niggling pain every now and then but this has been for 2 weeks alongside everything else x

  • Yes my sore throat was constant I left it a long time before I went to the doctors initially.

sonthe scan you have had is in

to check the lymph glands an ultrasound is the only way to see if lymph has cancer in as this doesn't show on an MRI so this is good that they are ruling this out first . I'm not sure why you had blood test maybe to see if you just have an infection or virus .

im not going to tell you not to worry becaus you will anyway but you are still young . But try and remain positive these cancers are rare it could be something a simple as silent reflux make sure  you just keep going to the docs if you aren't happy . You know your body .

    keep me posted with your results . X x x x

pps ruling it out first as tongue cancer left untreated or any cancer will go to the lymph glands x x

  • So that gives me hope then because I don't have a constant sore throat it's just every now and then, sometimes I get slight ear pain too, Iv had this a while and out it down to the fact I had my tragus pierced and took some time to heal. Today my jaw started to hurt. I don't know if I'm just thinking too much into it as I have read so much online and possibly giving myself symptoms.

ok so that makes sense, I'm praying that my scan results come back clear really am hoping, I noticed the lump in my neck back in November, the only thing I got on the scan day was that it was measuring smaller than 1cm. Otherwise nothing else.

I also had blood tests back in November which all came back clear. I have what seems to be oral thrush so my doctor gave me more blood tests yesterday to check my FBC and a diabetes test. This would be so much more easier to deal with than the big c word!

You mention silent reflux. I do suffer with heartburn most evenings when I go to bed and I'm trying to tell myself this is what is affecting my throat, but not so much the hing on the side of my tongue.

Thankyou for talking to me, I think I have frustrated my friends and family so much with this that they don't respond to me about it half the time. It's a horrible feeling.

Praying it nothing. How are you after treatment etc? X
