Low white blood cell count

Hi All. My mum had her first dose of chemo last Monday and since Weds she has been in hospital. Initially her face started swelling up... I didn't see anywhere that this was a side effect of the chemo? Has  this happened to anyone else? Anyway, they have given her antibiotics to help fight that. But now her white blood cell count is apparently dangerously low... they keep making her stay every day as it's not increasing.

shes having the injections in her stomach, but is there anything else she can do? I feel helpless :(

Shes also getting really frightened and depressed. I don't even know what to say or suggest.

help please :(

  • Hi Hayley123,

I've had the injections in the stomach as well to boost my white blood cell count during chemo. Usually took a few days to kick in. If they keep your Mum in hospital it probably is to keep an eye on her.

best help you can give her is to be around and let her know you are there to help.

    Good luck!

  • Hi Hayley one of the side effects of chemo is that it can damage your immune system and cause your white blood cell count to fall below it's usual level, when this happens your body is more open to picking up bugs \ infections because your immune system isn't working as well as it normally does, so the Hospital may think it's better to keep your Mum in until her immune system recovers to a normal level. My advice would be to ask lots of questions, Doctors & Nurses are usually really good & will make the time to give you as much information as you need, I have found it really helpful to talk as much as possible, and it's very good to talk to other people with cancer even if it's not the same type of cancer you have, there is still lots of common ground, I would also talk to MacMillian who will be provide lots of advice & help......I hope this helps
