Prostate Cancer - Swollen organs

My dad is in his 70's, he had cancer once, and now is receiving radiotherapy for Prostate cancer.

I know that had problems passing urine recently, then Diarrhoea, now he has swollen organs.  The swollen organs are the latest issue and he is now in hospital.  My question is are all these side effects of the radiotherapy that will disappear over time or is this a sign of something more serious.

Thanks in advance for any information.

Kind regards
KJC

  • Hello KJC,

Welcome to Cancer Chat and I am sorry to hear your dad is in hospital at the moment with swollen organs. I just wanted to let you know that I have asked our cancer nurses to post a response to your message which they will do in the next few days.

In the meantime, I hope you will also hear from some of our members who may have experience of prostate cancer radiotherapy.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello KJC and thanks for posting,

I am sorry to learn about your dad.

Radiotherapy can cause side effects. These can be temporary in which case they tend to get worse as treatment goes along and for a couple of weeks after it stops. Then things start to improve.  It is also possible for radiotherapy to cause side effects that crop up later on.  You can read more about this on our website at this link.

I’m afraid I am not sure what is happening with your dad. It may just be a treatment related side effect that has made him poorly, but there might be something else the matter too. It could be dehydration that needs to be corrected or he may have a bladder infection that needs treating.  This could well be an episode that his doctors expect him to get better from but as people get older they don’t always bounce back to health quickly.

I hope by now you have a better sense of what is going on and your dad has picked up.

    Take care,

    Julia
