diet?

about to start chemo for stage 3 IBC - any tips on what should NOT be eaten - some say no carbs; some say raw fruit & veg only - very confusing...what about organic baby food?

  • Hello happylady,

Welcome to our friendly forum. I am sure you will meet people here who have also asked themselves similar diet questions while going through chemotherapy and they will be able to share their personal experience with you.

We have some information here  which may be of interest to you. As each person has different dietary requirements,  we do recommend asking your doctor to refer you to a dietician who can give you professional advice specific to your particular case.

I hope this helps a little and good luck with your treatment!

  • Hi HappyLady,

Welcome to the forum. This would be a good question to ask your oncologist or lead nurse, as each chemo regime has different side effects.

I was on EOX and my consultant's advice about what to eat was pretty much common sense. As weight loss can be an issue with that regime, he said to eat whatever I enjoyed (my taste buds were temporarily affected so some things I'd previously enjoyed tasted horrid) and could keep down.

Apart from that, he just said to eat a balanced diet and to reverse the logic of a diet I'd use to lose weight. Full fat milk, butter, peanut butter, home made fruit smoothies, thickshakes and soups plus quite a lot of chocolate carried me through chemo without too much weight loss.

Your immune system will take quite a battering, so eating plenty of fruit, oily fish, fresh vegetables and salad are a good idea too.

    I hope this helps

  • Thanks - I'm a 30-year vegetarian & am eating like a horse; even through the worst of the nausea - hot Indian food, large breakfasts, etc - am gaining weight...2 chemo treatments down & 6 more to go...when does the weight loss start.  I start to regain energy about 4 days after chemo & with the help of random naps am more energetic than before the diagnosis.  So far, so good - another year to go  (Stage 3 IBC)
