Bowel Cancer at 32

So, was looking forward to 2016 being a great year, new job, new motorbike and heading towards a new house with my girlfriend of 12 years.  Then it turns out I had a squatter in my bowel, who I now refer to as the "squatter", an unwelcome guest that has put one hell of a downer on the year - my Cancer is quite severe, having gnome already spread to my Liver, the Primary is in the Bowel which makes it more treatable, but nonetheless, I still have one hell of a battle ahead of me - I am making a video log of how each day is going, please feel free to ask questions about what the whole process is like, and what I'm using as a source of strength - I know in the coming weeks some days will be good, and some not-so, the Log officially starts tomorrow but I have an introductory video to break the ice

  • Sorry you've had a rough few days, Dan, hope you are now on the up ready for the next onslaught and keeping the staff on their toes!  We all have our dark days with this disease, that's for sure, but a sense of humour does help keep the demons at bay.

I will be following your Vlog to see how you are getting on, and send my very best wishes.

  • Hi norckie, what a cheek, I am nearly 72 and don't think I'd be like the ones Dan shares with!

Good luck with your chemo tomorrow, I know the feeling having recently finished my second bout of six after ovarian recurrence - I too was tempted to call a halt after two or three as I always felt so bad with it, but I knew I had to go on and so must you, you are nearly halfway there!

    Take care, Hazel x

  • :0) thank you, I haven't slept very well! But shall put my big girls pants on today!! xx

  •

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us all. I am up to date with your video log. Sorry it's looking like the mid to end week before home. Has there been any variety of people in your ward? New faces or the same?

I know it's easy for everyone else to say "you will be ok".It's not as easy for us to believe it all the time while fighting some of these horrible symptoms. Even having a blocked up bowel can be really uncomfortable and not ideal. That's the unfortunate thing about the  morphine based painkillers because I still take a morphine based tablet (not for the cancer for something else).

It still doesn't have a good impact on the bowel though. So it's good to always have something like Senna at home incase you start to feel bloated. I personally don't like the Lactulous Solution (it gives me trapped wind!) so I have done the exact same as you and not realising it was making a difference to the movements!

Hope you see the medic team soon or have already seen them

And that you get your hat!!

    As always take care. Jen

  • Thanks Jen - I'm updating my log shortly, as I've just had some suppositories!!

  • That should do the job!!

Fingers crossed it solves the discomfort.

Will catch up on the log and check where things are at.

    Jen

  •

All the best with your scope today.

Very informative update via video log today.

Explains the primary and secondary situation.

It was similar in my example as the secondary ovarian tumour was first thought to be the primary culprit but then biopsy came back indicating it was the secondary.

The primary was located in the caecum part of my bowel eventually

Take care and will catch yp on your video later to hear how it went . All the best. Jen

  • Thanks Jen, it's great to see the V-log having a positive effect

  • Just seen your  'leaving hospital' vid., Dan, brilliant, good on yer!  Bet that surprised the other patients as you shot past.

Seriously, hope you are feeling better and actually have been discharged, until the next lot of treatment anyway!

    Take care, Hazel x

  • It is very encouraging and very open of you to share your journey day by day. You should be proud as its a hard thing to do but you are thoughtfully thinking of others at a time that's hard for you and your family/friends and that is amazing of you.

It must take a lot of effort to show your story every day as it includes the good  & the not so good. Hope you have an easy few days settling back home and please don't over do it or expect too much of yourself.

An easy thing to do is to expect even though back in the home environment that one must slip back into normal routine.  Please don't try too much too soon and take this weekend as a well earned holiday / recovery period.

I will continue to follow the V-Log and although it's not nice it's happening at all, it's interesting it's coming to light that bowel cancer in younger people must have more awareness made because when I was diagnosed in 2011 cases in our age group were much lower than they are now.

Even asking figures from my consultant and oncologist there has been an increase in these last 5 years on their case loads.

My bowel cancer was checked genetically and my brother decided to go and get tested but.the reason came back unexplained and non genetic

Sorry for the ramble but just feel after the amount you share on a daily basis about your journey it's good for you to hear some things back from others.

sleep well in your own bed and don't miss your hat or neighbours too much!! PS did you get to take your hat home?? Jen
