Bowel Cancer at 32

So, was looking forward to 2016 being a great year, new job, new motorbike and heading towards a new house with my girlfriend of 12 years.  Then it turns out I had a squatter in my bowel, who I now refer to as the "squatter", an unwelcome guest that has put one hell of a downer on the year - my Cancer is quite severe, having gnome already spread to my Liver, the Primary is in the Bowel which makes it more treatable, but nonetheless, I still have one hell of a battle ahead of me - I am making a video log of how each day is going, please feel free to ask questions about what the whole process is like, and what I'm using as a source of strength - I know in the coming weeks some days will be good, and some not-so, the Log officially starts tomorrow but I have an introductory video to break the ice

  • Hi Dan,

Just checking in as its Day 4 of Week 3 and I have just watched your most recent video blog.

It can be frustrating when a biopsy or test doesn't conclude what's needed and the test is required to be done again. Especially when you just want a date and drug picked and in place for the start of the chemo. Hope you get this soon so you can start focusing on the next part of this fight.

I am sorry tomorrow means an early visit to the hospital aka the hat shop! (Good to see a new hat in circulation tho!)

Please do let us know when you feel up to it how things went and how you are feeling after the biopsy procedure?

Have you been advised to take a Senna type laxitive tablet (or any type) at home to try and keep things moving as the bowels are a funny thing! Especially on the morphine drugs. I am on MST and find the Senna ticks me over most of the time.  I guess a "blockage" can still be present even if movements are still happening because lesser movements can be happening or some can prove more difficult to pass than others so remains in the system longer.

Take care and as always thanks for your logs and for keeping us all up to date. Will be thinking of you tomorrow for your procedure. Jen x

  • Hi Jen - had the Biopsy yesterday, it went very well all in all, so quite happy, it's just an unpleasant experience as you can feel them wiggling around in your innards! Hopefully they should now have what they need to get the party started - I'm off to my parents this weekend as my partner has come down with a nasty bug, so it'll be a bit lonely for a while, I am using Movicol & Lactulose for any constipation which seems to work quite well - catch up soon & thank you for your continued support

  • Hi Dan!

I must say I recognise the sound of the unpleasant "wiggling" from when inside as part of my surgery was in 2011.. It was an unusual case in my instance so nothing that likely would appear with you, but the sound of then wiggling around unpleasant idea sounds exactly like that one of my cancer journey memories of my appendix being removed as I had had an epidural trying to avoid anaesthetic. Thankfully there was limited times of that feeling so I am hopeful you won't have to put up with much more of that.

Hope Vicki/Vicky (unsure of spelling - sorry)improves and that you both feel better for when you can see each other again but it's definitely best for you to be away from any possible viral before chemo and best for her to recharge and start to feel better then you can go home hopefully. But sensible you both are taking time to look out for yourselves individually as well as together. I am sure your mum and family will be pleased to have you in their household for a while and have some time with them before you start the chemo.

please keep us up to date on how you and Vicky are doing and what is said about biopsy result and chemo etc etc.

I am in the middle of trying to locate you a hat to show you a photo as I am in the hospital at the moment.. So sorry it's taken me a bit of time to respond. It isn't cancer related as far as we know but the reason I am saying is that at first when I ended up back in hospital after my treatment I automatically concerned "it's back" or "it's worse" but sometimes other "minor" things crop up as well and promote issues so basically I am just saying not all symptoms post Cancer treatment are to worry about (although always get them checked!)so always in future if this situation arises jump in with open thought and don't just think it's definitely the big C. I have had a few issues since my Cancer which haven't been cancer so unfortunately I had had a good run without being put in the ward but we will see what happens.

I have kept up to date with all the logs though and will check in tomorrow to see if you have updated.

Take care and hope answers come soon and you know what detail will be done with the chemo etc.

keep fighting! You can do it! Jen X

  • Thanks Jen, good to hear from you - I hope all is well with yourself being in hospital & is nothing sinister - regarding the highly fashionable hat situation, I use the bowl in which they give you to be sick in (ensure there is no vomit prior to wearing) or the one that you use for the toilet - both garner high appraise from myself, but the "Vombowl" as I have named it (patented) is certainly the more comfortable of the two.

I am seeing Vik tomorrow as we are both missing each other & will have a big update for the VLog, the Waiting game will finally be over and the real fun begins!! Thanks again for your continued support and I hope to ur stay in hospital is brief and uneventful so you can get back to normality

    Kind regards - Dan

  • Thanks Dan!

I did have two hats at one point! But I have been in three bed arrangements over the last 20 hours and they have been lost in transition! Shall request some more and try for a pic!

Thanks for your top Hat Advice by Dan... Maybe you could start a newspaper column on how hospital items can become accessories?

I am pleased to hear you and Vik will catch up tomorrow and can find out some further info and be there for each other.

I shall let you know the outcome of my medical mystery - only if you wish to know tho!

Currently I am not allowed out of bed in case I take a fall... Blood pressure low and all that jazz.. Hope to locate some hat options and will let you know!

Take care and hope you are managing some sleep.

    Jen x

  • Sounds like the hats have become a desirable accessory - I would bet some of the other patients have poached them, it wouldn't surprise me - I'm going to start a Facebook page tomorrow & I'll post the link here so if anyone wants to post pictures/have a chat they can - I'm making the V-log tomorrow as I ran out of time today

  • Yeah just take today to see what you have to digest information wise personally from today yourself and then tomorrow you can catch up on the V-Log.

Please keep us informed of the Facebook page progress as I have an unflattering no make up "hat" photo to share with you lol! It's not my best photo but it shows off the accessory itself which is the main thing!

Hats were definitely in the hands of people who aren't being sick anymore/yet so I think they were like me and secretly just wanting them back to the room for hat accessories as there were limited ones on the ward. I managed to pinch one from the CT scan department when I was getting my CT this morning!

Hope you got to see your partner today and V is feeling better and you are both resting.

Looking forward to catching up with V-log tomorrow to see what's what after today but please take it easy tonight!

No further on with me but still low blood pressure so not allowed to leave the bed much. Argh. I crack up with these things like being so still because I am so busy when I am at home but I need to just deal with it and see what happens.  No diagnosis apart from gallstones on the abdomen scan which is good but not sure if they need to image else were.  Need to catch nurse that's come on night shift then going to tune into a conference call at 9.30pm given the patient wifi holds up .

Take it easy and speak soon! Jen

  • Good luck Dan,

Will keep track of your v-log.:)

Take each day as it comes.

  • Hi Dan, Your hospital videos were hard to watch at times. I'm so glad you're out and looking so much better. I'll follow your FB page once you start it. Good luck with it all. Take care Michelle

  • Hi dan

hope you're having a good day. I just wanted to say I think you're one amazing bloke. I've watched all of your videos and read your posts (I've just read that back and realise I sound really rather stalkerish lol, I'm really not by the way lol) but you're totally inspiring me to be brave about my results on my possible thymus gland tumor and mri scan coming up on my liver so I thank you for that!

you show that squatter who's boss young man and send it packing!

Sending best wishes and hugs to you and yours x
