lansoprazole

Hi as anyone else been put on these

I was given these just before finishing radiotherapy on the chest and most common side effects are indigestion heartburn problems swallowing.

Told to take 1 a day even before the side effects kicked in

I have now stopped them 2 days ago the actual side effects from the tablet was horrendous and far worst than the side effects from the radi.  Just wondered if anybody else had an opinion on these

Thanks in anticipation x

  • Hi again ecw

These tablets are to reduce acid in your stomach which may burn your already damaged insides. It takes a few days to take effect. The side effects you are experiencing may be from the radiotherapy rather than the medicine. The peak of side effects from radiotherapy occur at end of treatment and for up to two weeks after that. It would be worth phoning your oncology department for advice, if it is the lansoprazole causing your problems they may be able to offer you an alternative. It is also good to inform them when you discontinue taking a prescribed medicine. Kim

  • Hi again Kim

Yes I am seeing my oncologist tomorrow so will mention it then, while I was having my radiation 4 weeks) I was not on any Meds and felt fine no tidiness no sickness no side affects  at all then he started me on predislone, lansoprazole, also antacid and oxetacaine suspension, and now I feel **** headaches dizzy shakes noises in the ears. Had a brain Mri day before treatment started and was clear. He said last week when I mentioned it it would not have gone to brain.

    Thanks Kim x

  • Hi ecw

Quite a cocktail, I didnt have the prednisolone but can confirm that the oxetacaine anaesthetic can give you dizzy spells. Your oncologist should sort you out, lucky you have an appointment tomorrow. Good luck and best wishes. Kim

  • Hi,

I was on Lansoprazole for several years with no side effects. My guess is that the side effects you are having are being caused by something else - maybe the radiotherapy. My wife had radiotherapy and was having side effects several weeks after the treatment stopped.

Either way, chat to your doctor/oncologist. If it IS the Lansoprazole that's giving you side effects, there are several alternatives available.

    Best wishes
