Living life after surgery

I have had my kidney removed due to mass on 21st jan, I am now home recovering. I have got some appoinents through for hospital check ups..but I was wondering how people have been after surgery and I between appointments. I feel better each day but sometime feel like screaming. I am not sure how long to have of work and if my life will be normal..

  • Hi Loops

It depends how you feel and your type of work. Getting back to a normal life routine is good for your recovery, physical and mental. If you do hard physical work then take off as much time as you can afford, so you are fully recovered and don't cause damage to your wound. Realistically a minimum of 8 weeks is required even though the outside appears healed up there is a lot of healing to go on inside. Look at up to a year before you are fully recovered. Returning to work part time for a month or so if you are able is a good way to start back. Expect to feel tired, this is normal and take rest when you need it. Kim

  • Hi Loops,

I have just returned to work after my radical nephrectomy for a grade 3 RCC - (it was 2 kilos in weight). The surgery was 10th December 2010 and have now worked 3 days - one on and one off. I work on a busy forensic mental health unit so he work is tough at times and the risk of assult is always there. I have good support from my colleagues and senior management and that I feel is essential to getting back to work. Management do not expect me to do any more than I can and encouage me to say when I am tired and take a rest.

Ifyour employer is sympathetic and your colleagues are aware of your situation then you should be fine to return in 8 weeks but take it easy.
