Starting 5 weeks of Chemo and radiation - what to expect??

Hi everyone, I am very lucky to have caught cancer in my lymph node very early as I've been monitored closely since anal cancer removal (no treatment as I was pregnant) in 2014.  Just wondering what to expect as to side effects of 5 weeks chemo/radiation therapy? Sending best wishes for a cure of this horrible disease for each and everyone asap!!! X

  • Hi Rooneypops, im glad to hear your cancer has been caught early.

I had 6 lots of chemo every 21 days from July-Nov for Ovarian cancer. This probably won't seem very helpful but everyone is different.  I will happily tell you about my experience but yours could be totally different.

The tiredness I felt was nothing like I had ever experienced. It was like having an extreme version of the flu, my whole body ached from head to toe. My mind was all over the place not really able to settle at night. I couldnt follow a book or a film as I felt I was on another planet, floating about.

On the positive side I wasnt sick and didnt have diarrhoea which are 2 common effects. I did however get very constipated, so take something straight away if you do, don't leave it like I did thinking it will go away.

Most of the ladies I spoke to during my chemo sessions weren't eating. Me I couldnt stop. Had to nail the furniture down at one point,  lol. It's the steriods. Not long after eating id be starving again. I was told that its a good thing as it keeps your energy levels up, in which case I should have been pulling buses!

The radiotheraphy was a doddle compared to the chemo. I pain in the bum having to go every day for 5 weeks, but the effects weren't as extreme.I still felt tired and achy but ot as painful. I think it all depends where the cancer is.  As my radiotheraphy was on the hip/pelvic area I had diahorrea towards the middle of the treatment and needed to go for a wee more, especially in the night. Wasnt able to use bubble bath during and  4 weeks after treatment, so tomorrow afternoon I shall be having a lovely soak. My aches and pains have eased now to.

I hope the above has been helpful, but please take it all with a pinch of salt as we all react differently.

Please don't hesitate to contact me should you need any more info.

Good luck with everything, make sure you get plenty of rest, drink plenty and hopefully someone to look after you. Xx
