When I was first diagnosed with rectal cancer my initial surgeon stated colon removal & a colostomy bag fitted but I was so adamant I did not want this so had a second opinion  & consequently had the operation to removethe tumour  & since then no problems ...so stick to your guns - if you are not sure - have a second opinion !!!!!!!!!

    Hi, I'm really pleased to hear that all went well. My brother is a fighter like you!, and he doesn't want to have the colostomy bag. Can I ask who was the doctor or hospital that did your surgery? also, did you have external or internal radiotherapy?, Thank you.

    Hi Mary so pleased everything went well and it's true always get a second opinion. I always get second opinions espicially when it comes to my health. About 4/5 weeks ago i got the news i was free of liver cancer after a year of batteling the disease. And it could of been a totally different situation if you didn't look about for other opinions. Take care -Diane x

    Hi there - so sorry to hear about your brothers cancer - I had 5 weeks of external radiotherapy at The Churchill Hosp. in Oxford & then my wonderful surgeon removed my tumour at the Radcliffe in Oxford - hope this is some help - do not forget if you can remain positive it helps tremendously - anymore help I can give do not hesitate to ask !!!!

    That's great news doodymary48.  My aunt whom I am very close to was diagnosed with rectal cancer just before Christmas, and seems to be similar to you, as she's just finished her first week of 5 weeks radiotherapy.  They had mentioned that depending on how the tumour responds they may need operate, and that might involve a bag etc.  So it's reassuring to hear your positive experience (well, as positive as it can be in the circumstances of course).
