Triple negative breast cancer

Hi, 

My sister was diagnosed and treated for triple negative breast cancer, she was cancer free for 6 months after then it reappeared in her brain. I am confused because apparently her consultant has given her 6mnths - 2yrs but I'm not sure how, she is cancer free at the moment. Can someone explain to me how this works?
