Excercising

Hi.

I have recently been diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. Before being diagnosed, I was massively into my fitness attending regular Bootcamp sessions with a local personal training company. Bootcamp sessions involve running, sit ups, press ups, lifting weights etc.

Last year I signed up to a race which is in May which I really hope I can attend.

So my question is can I still attend Bootcamp sessions and compete in the race?  I haven't started treatment yet and unsure when I will do.  I'm meeting with my consultant next week.

Thanks for reading

  • Phew Lou Lou - I am shattered just reading about it but also very envious as running is something I always regret not doing as I love being out in the countryside and think I would have loved it.  In my condition now, I just am content with long walks.

If you are seeing your consultant, he would be the perfect person to ask.  I would guess you can still exercise sensibly but just not put too much of a strain on your body when it is trying to deal with treatments too.

Hope everything goes well for you.  Keep us uptodate if you can x

  • Hi lou lou,

I presume that's when you fine out when your op is?

My breast cancer care nurse has told me that although they will push me to get back to normal I do need to be careful with that arm for life.

Not that you can't do it,good on you if you have something to focus on and aim towards.I happen to think that will be of a great benefit to you.I think what they mean is we must be aware of over doing it,and lifting weight bearing on that side. She did say that overdoing it can cause fluid build up and swelling that side.

Your team will advise you better though hon.Because I'm not sure myself with timescale and other treatments after the op.

I hope you get the answers you want.Write all your questions down its so easy to go blank

    Take care Ness x

  • Thanks Max and Ness I will ask my consultant when I meet with her. I think excercising will keep me sane throughout this.

Ness, yes I think they will be telling me when my op is when I meet with the consultant. Ekkk!

    Xx

  • Hi lou lou,

Sane is a good thing! It should be too long to wait for your op mine was 2 weeks after diagnosis. The hospital called me with appointments before I even knew what op id be having.

I hope your doing well.Keep me posted Ness xxx

  • 2 weeks?! It will be a week tomorrow since I was diagnosed. Will keep you posted x

  • You are brave Lou Lou to do things like Bootcamp and you must be super fit! I will shamefully confess I have never tried bootcamp sessions before and it's not in my New Year's Resolutions list :p

I see you have already received excellent advice from Max and Ness - your consultant would be the best person to ask about exercising.

We do have some general guidelines here which may be useful but I would definitely ask your consultant as they are aware of your specific case and circumstances.

    Best wishes,
