Scared about Chemotherapy

Hi  I am just waiting on word to start my Chemotherapy and although I have been fine with my diagnosis and coping well I am terrified at the thought of starting this. I am to have it once every three weeks for 6 hours at a time for 18 weeks is this a normal timescale? I am also in a lot of pain, does Chemo help with this?

  • Hello Casee

I'm sorry you feel so frightened of starting chemotherapy.  We all are before we start it because, of course, it's the unknown and you hear so many stories about it, mainly from people who have never had it, that you worry even more.  I'm afraid I can't help you on whether the chemo helps with the pain as my pain went when I had surgery.  I do know though that six sessions of chemo (one every three weeks) is normal.  I had to have a longer infusion of chemo, roughly six hours or just over.

Casee, there is another recent thread on here started by Vontom about chemotherapy where some of the forum (including me) have written about our experiences.  It may help you if you want to have a look at it.

Do take care and let us know how you get on.

  • Hi BB

Thanks for that I will certainly take a look. I need an surgery which can't be done at present so I was hoping that the Chemo would help with the pain and bleeding. Will just have to wait and see.

  • Hello Casee

I remember only too well the pain and bleeding so please don't "wait and see" Casee.  Please do contact the nurses either on this site or by phone for more information on what can be done about that.  From my own personal experience, I do know that chemo should, and does, shrink the "invader/s" and as it this that's causing the pain and subsequent bleeding, then logically (oh yes, I used to watch "Star Trek") both should ease up.  But, as I say, contact the nurses.  They are very friendly and helpful and mines of information (but don't tell them I said so otherwise they'll only get big-headed, hee hee).

Take care and let us know how you get on.
