Cancer survivor

Hello everyone, my name is Dianne, I am 63, married with two grown up children and two beautiful grandchildren. I was diagnosed with bowel cancer last year, I was fortunate as this was picked up early from the !poo test! That arrives through the post. I had the offending tuna removed followed by IV and tablet chemotherapy. I had a stoma bag for 10 months and a reversal 8 months ago. Besides being a frequent visitor to the loo, especially after eating and even with the occasional accidents I was coping. About 2 months ago I had a tummy bug which has left me with a burning sensation and extremely sore. The doctor prescribed pessaries and cream which didn't help, I am now trying GTN gel which is used to treat anal fussure and it has eased the symptoms. I am now waiting for a referral back to the hospital and feeling slightly worried, as I was not in this much discomfort after  the  reversal.   Any advise would be helpful. Thank you

  • Hi Dianne

I'm afraid I can't offer much advise but I do recognise the difficulties. My step father had a similar experience at a similar time from the sounds of it. Unfortunately he's about 20 years older than you and whilst the operation was a complete success dealing with the after effects has been much more difficult. He's still in quite a lot of discomfort but they are holding off replacing the bag. They've tried a botox procedure and I think there's another thing they want to try.

I guess it rather depends what you're worried about. If you're concerned that they'll replace the bag - and I know my step-father is I think it's fair to say they'll probably want to try other things first.

It does sound as if these sorts of operations do have complications like this not infrequently and it probably does take time to heal properly

    Best of luck
