oesophageal cancer- secondary

Hi I'm 44 and was diagnosed last year with oesophageal cancer I had pre op chemo op went well all tumor removed then mop up chemo after. I've just had a scan that shows secondary in both my lungs therefore no op or cure. I'm starting chemo in a couple of weeks and hope I respond?! I have 2 kids and a fab husband but in total despair now, anyone to help please?

  • Are you getting plenty of support from the hospital? My partner is in her first round of chemo for oesophageal cancer and is due to have the op in December. There are no words that I can say to help with what you're going through, it's a very tough time. The hospital here have offered lots of advice for groups and charities that can support us both during this testing time. I hope you have the same to help you where you are. Sending good hopeful vibes your way.

  • Thank you so much for responding, we are getting lots of support but it's still very lonely. I was doing so well and felt fit and healthy after the op. The protocol is not to scan after the op and post op chemo which I wasn't happy about. But with recent back pain the consultant agreed to a scan which has discovered tiny nodules in both lungs. I have no current symptoms and feeling well. I can only hope and pray I respond to the chemo and it keeps it at bay..each day is a bonus. Good luck to your husband and his surgery is a success please stay in touch best wishes Kx

  • Hi Kris,

First of all - don't give up hope. Hearing the words inoperable and incurable is probably the worst experience you and I have ever had and it can leave you feeling numb and despairing.

Try to avoid reading the statistics on average survival rates etc. These are only averages and take no account of, say, the age or physical fitness of the individual patient.

Some of us beat the odds and survive longer than originally expected. Whether this is through sheer good luck, positive attitude or whatever is beyond me but it does happen.

I was lucky enough to react well to the chemo, both my inoperable primary (Oesophageal) and secondary cancers shrank by over 50% and so far, two years on, they are dormant. Not an ideal situation, but better than I had dared hope for when I started chemo.

    Good luck
    Dave
