Mouth cancer

Hi everyone. I was diagnosed with floor of mouth cancer in  June 2014. Had bottom teeth removed and whole new floor of mouth reconstruction. Unfortunately they didn't manage to remove the whole tumour, still some 'rogue' cells in there!  Had next op in October 2014 - this involved more of floor of mouth surgery and a neck dissection to check for bad cells on neck.  This went well and I got the all clear at the end of October. I was elated, felt wonderful for a while. Then the enormity of what I had been through hit home! One year on, I am going to have screws put in, ready for new teeth to be inserted, this is happening in December, probably get the actual teeth next February time.  I now constantly worry about cancer coming back. Every pain, sore, sore throat, cough etc worries me, it's driving me mad! Why do I constantly feel like this?

  • Hi Lilly,

Sounds like you have been through the wars.

Im sure all of us on here have the same worries and feelings. Every pain or sting, you ask yourself is it cancer.

I would suggest you look at it this way, (it works for me but everyone is different). I say to myself, I had cancer, it happened because I did not eat well and had a stressful job. Now that I do eat well and don't have a stressful job, the cancer will not come back.

Everyone has different reasons for why they think it might have happened, but if you choose one, take it out of your life, and then say to yourself, it is not going to come back now the cause is gone, it might help.

We are always told there is a chance it could come back, but why worry about it I say to myself, its pointless, it does not make sense.

Everyday something could happen to us, we could get run over by a bus, a plane might fall out of the Sky, a car come off the road into us, we know in our minds these things can happen, but we don't worry about them every day, why should it be any different to cancer.

On another note, I hope your neck is ok after a year, I had mine (due to tongue cancer) a year ago and neck moverment is really good now. Im the same, every sting in the tongue, I used to worry, but it is very difficult to get cancer, the process it very complex and more than one thing has to go wrong, that helps me as well.

    Good luck to you.

  • Hi, thanks for the reply. I used to smoke, about 15 roll ups a day - the day I got diagnosed I quit, not had one since. I also eat quite healthily but love chocolate and refuse to deny myself everything I like. My neck is ok now but still get dry mouth, dry throat etc.  I had a wonderful surgeon (and all his team) so still put my faith in him. Onwards and upwards eh? Where did you have your surgery - mine was in Poole, Dorset.
