feeling tired all the time

hi had my op 2 weeks ago this weds, wide excision and removal of lymph noded for breast cancer, getting my results on thurs to see if it has spread, but feeling very positive. i just feel so tired all the time even after a good nights sleep, dont have much pain just tender under my arm. i thought i would be feeling a lot better by now, iam able to do things but find i have to sit down after a while, and if i go out then have a sleep in the afternoon, was thinking about returning to work before my radiotherapy starts but dont think i will be able to feeling like this.although trying to stay positive as was a very small lump, still feel down some days and get tearful. im sure what im feeling is all normal, but it is the tiredness thta is getting me down all the time.

    Hi Marianne,

I think it's usual to feel tired so soon after your recent surgery. General anaesthesia can really affect your energy levels and along with dealing with the mental aspect of your current situation, and any medication you're taking, it can all add up to making you feel weary!

My advice would be to listen to your body and rest when you need to, but mention your tiredness on Thursday when you go for your results. I remember feeling tired for many weeks after any surgery even though I thought I would bounce back! And I was frustrated that I couldn't do as much as I used to do; but rest and patience paid off!

As for returning to work, maybe you could consider a phased return just to see how you feel. I returned to work three weeks after my lung surgery, but in honesty, it was hard going (I work in a school) so be kind to yourself and if you can, take the time to really look after yourself.

    Take care, Jo x

P.S. Will be thinking of you on Thursday x

  • We were talking about this at my gynae group recently. We are all 6 - 12 months post surgery and all still feeling varying amounts of tiredness and some severe fatigue.  Major surgery does take it out of you and, as Jo has said, listen to your body.   Best wishes.
