News on E-Cigs

I am not proud to say this - especially on a cancer site - but I am 'coming out'!  Here goes .... I am Max56 and I smoke occasionally!  I dont drink, dance naked in public places or have any other vices (that I would put on a public forum anyway) but I find it sooooo hard to let go of the odd ciggie in times of stress!

In view of the news today surrounding e-cigs, I am considering trying out electronic cigs. Are there any links to give me information on their safety?  They have surely got to be better than the real thing and no different than a patch or gum? Are you classified as a non-smoker with the 'e's?

Has anyone any experience or wise words about e cigs please?  Are there any safety issues regarding inhaling the vapour?  Could the Government still be keeping us guessing because of the revenue they will lose if everyone switches to them?

Gosh - its quite therapeutic to make such an admission - lets see if others will follow suit haha!

  • Hi Max  being  a smoker myself  for  more  than  30  years  I  changed  to  the  e-cig  last  july  and  they  do  take  a  bit  of  getting  used  to,  they  have  only  got  nicotine  in  them  and  none  of  the  harmful  chemicals  that  are  in  cigarettes,  Did  you  see  that  England  are  actualy  thinking  about  letting  people have  them  o   pprescription   as  they  are  95%  safer  than  normal  cigs,  I  haven't   been  able  to  have  a puff  since  my  chemo  as  it  made  me  realy  sick,  but  iv  I  do  smoke  again  then  it  will  be  the  e- cig  I go  back  on,  I  managed  to  get  my  husband  and  a  friend  to  go  on  the  e- cig  anc  my  friend  now  calls  it  her  dummie  lol,   if  you  do  go  on  the  e-cig  start  off  with  the  18mg  tobacco,  I  found  it  was  the  closest  to  real  cigs,  it  does  catch  your  breath  the  first  couple  of  puffs  bug  you  will  soon  get  used  to  it, and  you  wont  smell  like  an  old  ashtray  haha,  hope  this  helps  you,  pretty  sure  the  people  selling  it  in  your  area  will  be  able  to  explain  it  all  to  you,

  • Hello Max,

Thanks for sharing your big secret :) ; it's nice to know you trust us all here and it's good to hear you don't actually dance naked in public places (that made me laugh!).

This blog post will answer a lot of your questions, including whether e-cigs are safer than cigarettes. Find out more too about the promise and challenges of e-cigarettes here. We also have a news report which was only unpublished yesterday and which I strongly recommend you read. Our Cancer Chat manager, Sarah, actually posted today about this news report so I will also point you in the direction of her latest thread on this topic - which is here.

I hope all these links will answer all your questions, but if any of these remain unanswered, let us know and we will be happy to find out for you!

    Best wishes,

    Lucie

  • Hello nat2107,

Thanks for sharing your experience. The best ones to buy are from chemists as there are a lot of unregulated ones for sale. Also they shouldn’t contain any tobacco. E-cigarettes consist of a battery, a cartridge containing nicotine (the addictive ingredient in tobacco), a solution of propylene glycol or glycerine mixed with water, and an atomiser (a device that turns the nicotine solution into a fine mist or vapour). It’s the toxic cocktail of chemicals in tobacco smoke that kills half of all long-term users, so we wouldn’t advocate any amount of tobacco. The e-cigarettes which have been reviewed in this article don’t contain tobacco and that is why they have been declared to be safer than smoking. Any products containing tobacco are not in that category. You can find out more about all this here.

We hope this will answer all your burning questions,

    Lucie

Hi Lucie ...... and thanks so much for the information and links - I think I will give them a try to have on standby when I feel like tearing my hair out (or defacing the wig in my case).  Believe me, it would make many people laugh if I danced naked in a public place - and it would be great to bring some happiness to the bored commuters going to and from their place of work wouldnt it haha!

Thanks again for your help Lucie and best wishes to the rest of the team too! x
