What is the recovery period after the operation?
Hi Dunvale,
Thanks for posting. I hope you don’t mind, one of the moderators asked me to post something.
Recovery after a removal of the prostate gland (prostatectomy) varies a lot depending on the individual. For example, how fit and well they are and if they have other medical conditions that might complicate the recovery. You’ll certainly need to plan some time to recover at home once you have been discharged from hospital. Depending on the type of prostatectomy, the hospital stay may be about 3 to 7 days. Generally speaking, most doctors recommend that people stay off work for at least 5 to 6 weeks after any major operation like this (or perhaps longer if someone has a heavy manual job). Also, to avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise during this time. Some men may not feel like they are back to normal after 6 weeks and it can certainly take longer and is more gradual for some.
Another charity called Prostate Cancer UK have some information about recovery here (scroll down the page to get to ‘Going home’). It’s also good to hear from men who have been through this operation themselves, you will see there is a video on this page of Colin’s story.
Also, I thought Cornaby’s experience on CancerChat might be useful here (see Coranby 3rd down).
I hope other men are able to post and give you the benefit of their experience.
Take care,
Helen
