Oncotype DX test for breast cancer

Hi , I have grade 2 invasive breast cancer and am waiting for my Sentinal node results. I am also oestrogen positive and HER2 negative. If my SN comes back as negative I am an ideal candidate for the newly approved Oncotype DX recurrence test which looks at the likelihood of a cancer recurrance and informs a decision whether to have chemotherapy or not. The test is very expensive and I am wondering if anyone has been offered it?

  • Hello Kalisunshine,

This all sounds very interesting! In case anyone missed it, I thought I would bump your post and hopefully you can get chatting soon with someone else who has been offered this test.

We have some information on our site on the Oncotype DX test here. If you wanted to talk to our nurses about it in more detail, you are also welcome to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,

  • Sentinal nodes came back as negative so my surgeon has agreed that I would be a suitable candidate for this test but my local authority doesn't fund it! I have my first meeting with my oncologist tomorrow so am going to discuss it with her and talk about paying for it myself (£2500) if she agrees I am a suitable. I think it is one of those tests that will be widely available in a few years time. For most people this test is about ensuring they don't give chemo to those who don't need it, for me it's more about ensuring I have it if it would benefit.

  • So oncologist agreed I am an appropriate candidate for this test -as long as I pay for it! Spoken to my kind credit card provider and they extended my spend capacity on my Visa card! Just felt I had to do it. Results should be back on 10th September, will post outcome.

  • Thanks for the update Kalisunshine! It's great you managed to get it agreed. Fingers crossed for you for the 10th.

  • Today is a Good day . Oncotype score of 6. (1-18 is low risk of distant recurrence over the next10 years) so no chemotherapy just Tamoxifen and radiotherapy. Overwhelming sense of relief. So glad that finally all the waiting is over.
